Hi all,

Having a bit of a crisis. A girl that worked in the salon on a self employed basis booked in a girl for prom hair. The girl and her mum said they wanted her hair curled. The girl is mixed race and has quite long (Below shoulder length) afro carribean hair.

The stylist has now ditched the salon and it's now up to me to do this girls hair! I have ZERO experience with afro carribean hair and obviously only saw this girl in passing during her consultation with the other stylist.

Does anyone have any hints or tips for me? Am I better using hot tools or setting the hair??

SO STRESSED! (and to make matters worse the SE stylist went away with half the money as it was paid upfront!)

Thank you in advance xx

What is the hair texture? I know you said Afro hair but Afro hair comes in different textures. If she is mixed is her hair not already curly? What type of curl would she like?

From what I saw it was medium texture, not super coarse or tight. Yes her hair is already curly. She wanted loose ringlet type curls

Whats the history of her hair is there any trace of a chemical relaxer there? So many questions and contradictions that need answering and looking at..

Personally i would give her her money back and apologise on behalf of the so called 'stylist' for running out on her and let her go to a salon that has experience in afro carribean hair.

For the sake of you and the salons reputation its the best thing to do. No point in getting sued for chemical burns because someone else ran out on her😞

I have afro carribean hair and its not a straight forward task to create a style that lasts

Good Luck 🍀

I am NOT a hairstylist, but do have afro caribbean hair, which is very thick and I have tight curls. I have it natural - no chemical straightener, but I have it straightened out and curled professionally often. Her hair would most likely need to be straightened out then curled and hair sprayed in small sections. Can be achieved with straighteners - but the stove irons used in most Afro Caribbean salons do an excellent job…would defo need to have the correct styling/heat protection products suitable for the hair type….I've had a stylist who was not experienced with afro hair style my hair for a photo shoot, and ended up with disappointing results… I hope it all goes well, and you manage to sort it out.

The girl is 11 years old. No chemical relaxants have been used. Unfortunately in my area there are no salons that specialise in afro caribbean hair but thank you for your input

Oh shes Under 16 yrs old, Are her parents involved in whats happening? Seeing as there isnt anyone specialising in afro hair. If your interested.. it could be a good market for you could look into offering afro caribbean hair services in your salon in the future.. Just a thought lol ☺️

Update: girl came in, we detangled, heat protected, straightened, brushed through and then curled with a one and a half inch barrel. I'll try and post a pic. Girl and her mum were delighted
