I usually use the pre designed masks but for those of you that use stencils what is the nack to holding them so the lines are crisp and not to scratch the paint off the tip

It's tricky! And not easy, especially a first.

The trick is two fold. 1. you need to hold the stencil lightly against the nail plate. Don't try to curve it around for a snug fit or you will open up the stencil and everythig will be fuzzy looking. 2. you must spray/mist the paint very lightly and at right angles to the stencil so that the paint is not forced under the stencil. If you angle the brush you will ruin the design. Stop when finished wait a second or two and lift the stencil off.
If you have trouble with paint scratching then you are spraying too thick and too wet. MIST the paint on very lightly and in layers and then the paint will be dry when you remove the stencil.

The most common mistake made by airbrushers (particularly new ones) is to spray too much and too wet. It causes so many problems for you. Learn to mist and you are on the way to success.
