Hi all, i know you have probably heard this one many times but i am a newbie looking for a course and was hoping for some advice please. i have searched the forums but just wanted some up to date advice. there are so many courses to choose from. i am a complete beginner, although i did a gel nail course about 5 years ago which cost be about £1000 with a company who was so rubbish that i completely lost all confidence and they have now gone bust i beleive. so as you can see, i didnt want to make that mistake again and was thinking the best route would be nvq so have been looking into that. although after searching this site it seems that you guys dont think the nvq is any good and that company courses are better. i am just worried about going through the same thing again, and also, how to get as much trainign as i need out of the short 4 or 5 days that you get iwth these courses. also worried about finding models! (silly i know!). i would be really grateful for all your advice. by the way i live in leeds. thanks in advance. xx

Who did you train with before hun ?

I would strongly reccomend that you contact sweet squared in leeds and ask them for details of their courses. I cant comment on NVQ as i have no experience of them but I do have experience of terrible training, (search for a thread saying dont be conned with bogus training) and cant rate sweet squared enough.

In my opinion they were the best (had training with them and two other companies) and I know they wont let you down.

You are in Yorkshire near the best known training company in the UK - Sweet Squared the home of CND. Aren't you lucky!! If the fact that they are the only nail company to have ever won not one but 2 awards for industry best training doesn't give you confidence then maybe the fact that CND has also been at the top of the nail business food chain for 30 years will.

Like anything, go with reputation and experience and recommendation and you will not go wrong.

I don't blame you for being wary and you are right to be but not in the case of CND training or products.

thanks for all your help. the company i trained with before was called allessandro. i see that cnd is recommended alot on this site and just wondered if the site and cnd are linked in any way. i have researched so much and just dont know who to trust at the moment. i really want to get it right this time. i thought nvq was the best way to go as this is 'government recognised' but just dont know any more. thanks again xx

NVQ is the bare minimum of education for doing nails ... therefore, the education is not as thorough as company training with the brand of products you want to use nor does it go anywhere near as far.

The salon geek is not a CND site and never has been but there are many many CND techs here as well as many many others as you can easily see.

The CND presence here on the salongeek is in line with the CND market share of the industry.

Now I really can't say anymore to convince you nor do I want to. It is quite apparent that the techs on the site who use CND have nothing but praise for the brand and the training. You have come here for info and you have got it ... this is the largest on line site for salon professionals in the word and has been for some years. Maybe for your own comfort you should get more validation from elsewhere if you do not trust what you are reading from the professionals here.

You are also most welcome to make an appointment at the Sweet squared office just off the Ring Road in Leeds and meet the educator there and view the faciities etc. Can't say fairer than that now can I?

By the way .. Alessandro has not gone bust although their former distributor may have. They are a very large company based in Germany and still going strong there.

I can not recommend CND, enough. My friend next door to me trained six months previous to me, with a different company, and I can not believe how poor her training was (Is) she does not do prep,, got taught with white tips (lazy) and only just learning to sculpt NOW... I have just completed my CND L&P foundation in Liverpool,, and can turn out good sets (not fab but that comes with practise) and I am sculpting.

Yes her course was cheaper at first,, she paid weekly (psychological really) but I think in the long run she will pay more than what I have done, as I am getting paying clients NOW who are happy with there nails,, no lifting etc,, and I do believe that is because I have had proper thorough training with a reputable firm who don't just take your money and give you bog standard training.

Honestly Hun CND training is second to none, I don't think you will meet anyone who has been on CND courses and not agree with me. When you think nails what do you think,,,, I always thought CND, thats what made me choose them xxx HTH
