Hi all,

I'm looking to move abroad this summer for medical reasons and am currently researching different countries. So far I've mainly looked at southern Spain.

Does anyone know anything about the beauty industry in Dubai or have worked there? - or any other sunny location come to that.

Any help or knowledge would be greatly received!

I watched a program about Dubai and the woman went to a beauty salon and had some treatments, she was talking about how it's a way of life to visit the salon. It seems like there is a lot of money to be spent there!!! As it has some very wealthy people. Hopefully someone will be able give you a response from a more personal experience!

I can't offer any advice on the subject but can I just say 'ooh you lucky thing'!! :green: Good luck with your move to blue skies and sunshine

my sister was working for a lady in dubai and helped set up her salon which was in hello magazine in sept (i think) apparently beauty is a big thing in dubai and def something that i would love to have done however i have a baby so cant just up and go.

one of our geeks went over into that part of the world a few months ago to set up a training place, iam sure if you pm here she would be more than willing to offer you some advice.

She is one of the nicest people you could ever know, and also if you get scratch mag she also has been writing a piece about here new life in the too.

HTH.

Tilly Ann a geek here on site, is now working in Dubai...she is lovely and I am sure if you PM'd her she could give you some advice.

That's the one. TillyAnn who is the CND educator/ambassador who has set up and is running a large training school there. Also Alex fox (editor of SCRATCH) is living in Doah (spl?) and would be glad to help you find out about the scene there.

Oh great it sounds like a promising possibility. Thank you for your info, I've sent a couple of PM's - I hope they don't mind! I'm just trying to reasearch as much as I can.

It is an exciting prospect, I don't have any major ties in England, but it is more a necessity that I move rather than a choice - good job I have an adventurous personality!

Thanks everyone for your input!
xx

have you thought about working on cruise liners - you would then have the back up of company you are working for rather than going it alone in a foreign country?

Hello

I am looking to work aboard this year too and often see beauty jobs in Dubai but I never apply of them as I no nothing about the country or what its like to work there and live there, many of the jobs offer accomadation but contracts are for 2 years which I think is too long.

Did you get any other info on therapists that have worked there, would really apprecite any info, Im ready to go now just waiting for the right opportunity to come up. I worked in Italy last year very good experience but would like to try somewere different now.

:)

I worked as a therapist in Dubai for 2 years. Beauty and grooming is a way of life , women think nothing of having a pedicure every week. There are so many spas and salons now, but generally the wages are low.

Dubai is tax free, but the cost of living is extremely high, so it is crucial to secure a job with accommodation. You also need a work visa to work in Dubai. An employer will normally sponsor you in order to secure this.

Hope this helps.

Hey

Thanks for your reply , How did you find it out there? What were the salon like you worked in? , was it easy to make friends ect.

Hi - sent you a message on the finer points, but Dubai is a great party town and it's really easy to make friends as the majority are away from home too.

i live in bahrain if that helps you. Its not Dubai but this is a huge industry in the gulf. We seriously lack skilled professional as Asian labor is cheaper and more economical. The few salons and spas in Bahrain are few and far between, but there are some good therapists here. Dubai on the other hand has zillions of spa's but salaries are low and commission structures are where your moeny comes from, work hard and u gain a lot. Temorary jobs are not readily available as summer jobs as contracts need to be 1 to two years. Dubai is saturated but it defiantly is a MUTI million dollar industry here and despite the economic down turn this industry goes from strength to strength Try it u have nothing to loose.
