hi!

i dont even know if there are any aussie geeks on here but im moving shortly to australia/nz (undecided yet) and i need to know - how and where do you get insurance? we have specialist insurance companies and regulatory bodies in the uk but after hours of googling - it seems you do not???
im confused.
also are either SVQ's or HNC's recognisable in these countries??
how easy for me is it going to be trying to become self employed in a salon over there??

Try these two links, they are for Australian Beauty Therapy Industry Associations, that should get you started.

I haven't heard of SVQ's & HNC's here in Australia but you may be able to apply for RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) with one of the colleges here. This is commonly available if you have done part of a nail/beauty course in the past and now want to complete your studies. If you have proof that you have previously received a nationally recognised qualification for certain parts of the course this can be credited toward the course you are now doing. You would need to find out whether the training you have done would be recognised as equivalent to Australian training standards.

If you were wanting to start your own salon here then technically nothing would be stopping you. There is no regulation here in Australia to say who can practice beauty therapy or nails. My first step would be to contact the two companies I've attached links to, they should be able to help you in regards to whether your qualifications can be recognised here. By becoming a member of either association, you also receive discounts on insurance and business banking services. Hopefully they can point you in the right direction with the information you're looking for.

Slightly off topic now... May I recommend Queensland Australia. I think it's a wonderful place to live. I live near the coast and the weather is always beautiful and warm. It's still 26 degrees here right now and it's about 6pm.

HI!

I believe that the insurance rules are completely different here in NZ and you have general insurance rather than being insured for each treatment that you offer.

I am not sure about the qualifications. As long as you have an international qualification such as CIBTAC or CIDESCO then you should be fine, otherwise you can contact the NZ Association of Beauty Therapists. for more info. The New Zealand Association of Registered Beauty Therapists, Inc.

I came over here from the UK about 5 years ago and absolutely love it! I trained in NZ so am not sure how the qualifications translate for you. The great thing about this part of the world (Aus and NZ) is that setting up on your own is quite straightforward and we are a country of small businesses here, so there is lots of support. I plan to do the same thing soon, I hope.

Let me know if you would like any more info, you can always PM me.

PS - NZ gets my vote!! :)
