Hi there Rachel ,
There are some good shampoos and conditioners out there
probably made by top hair people ,
but as a rule of salon geeks , were not really allowed to recommend over the counter products , only professional ones , I'm sure a salon nearby will stock top products of shampoos and conditioners too and they could happily recommend them for you and your hair type,
also maybe some other hairdressers on here have their favourite brands , Ive heard that Aveda is good,
sorry I cant be of more help  x

.

Personally and professionally speaking...there aren't any.

Why supermarket brands?
One of the greatest perks of being self employed is the oasis that is....
THE WHOLESALERS!!!! WOOOOO!

I no longer do hair...(havent for some years) but beens you asked what was best from a supermarket and not a professional range then i would say that L'Oreal Elvive has always been fine with my hair.

I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes here...so I'm speaking from a "personal" view as opposed to "professional"

But, my all time favorite shampoo is by Melaleuca from it's "Naturals" product line.
It contains tea-tree oil which is good for dandruff etc, and helps to protect kids from head lice at school.
I love Melaleuca products and use many of their hygiene products, beauty and housecleaning products.
There ARE some things I dont like (their conditioner), but love their shampoo.
I've tried MANY different brands from dept stores, salons etc... And I'm a FUSSY bird....
Melaleuca is still my favorite and is great for the whole family.

LOVE'EM!

You would need to find a Melaleuca salesperson in your area. They ARE international but not available via stores or salons.
Google to learn more.

Hi victoria~

Would this line be like a Amyway product, where the company makes laundry detergent, shampoos, cleaning agents etc?

The Melalueca factory and distribution center is 51 miles from my house, it is one of the major employers in our area. With them being so close and because a large majority of the people in the area are employed or associated with Malelueca in some fashion, we have taken time to learn about their products.

Malelueca does make a quality product, however unless you are a Malelueca sales representative or belong to the Malelueca orginization, you can't sell their products. That, is the point I guess I'm trying to make. This is a retail product, but not one that I could carry as stock in my salon with out becoming an exclusive Malelueca representative.

Salon products are manufactured for salons to help maintain and support salon services. They are also an avenue to help increase revenue with out working longer hours or cutting the quality of our services.

I'm glad you like your products, stick with them if they are working for you, and if you would like to give your stylist a raise, talk to them about the professional products that are available. Most professional salon products are garunteed by the manufacturer and if you don't like the product the salon usually has a policy in place for exchanges to get you a product you do like.

Now Victoria you have one more reason to come to Idaho, you can come tour the Malelueca plant!!! Just let me know!! (you will need to autograph an article though...)

hehe

You're way too cute!

Nahh I don't sell them. I just order from a friend who orders regularly. (She's BIG on vitamins and all that hooplah... vitamins aren't my thing)
And no, they're not like Amway. You do NOT have to sell. You just order what YOU want. BUT the option to sell is available.
I dont bother with all that fuss. While I do know several people who make a fantastic living doing it, that's not for me. And while I love many of their products.. just like with any company, they dont have the corner on 'everything' and so, some products... ehhhh so-so, know what I mean?

BUT
If I had to choose between department store/pharmacy shampoo and salon (and leave out melaleuca) THEN I would choose Salon product every time (well, that depends on the brand in the salon too LOL Like I said, I'm a fussy bird haha)

Keep in mind: my hair is dyed, Naturally curly (read that to mean fuzzy waves), Ultra long and mega thick. (my hair has killed vacuums, NO JOKE, ask me about it sometime - THREE of them haha)
Takes an eon to wash/rinse/condition/rinse... AND 45 min to blowdry/style IF I'm straightening it. Having said that, I only wash it every 3 to 4 days, because I don't want to overdry it AND I don't have that much time to give to my hair daily.
I need a shampoo that REALLY WASHES well, and rinses clean AND a conditioner GUARANTEED to detangle as my hair tends to knot up like crazy (and shoot me now if you want, but I like to use Avon conditioner for coloured hair LOL It's the only one so far that detangles my hair WITHOUT using a spray-leave-on conditioner/detangler) If I could afford 10$ a bottle.. then I'd go to the salon

And note: because I have so very much hair, it takes big amounts of shampoo and conditioner.
AND my girls have long thick hair like mom (near to their waists)
SO
we use TONNES of shampoo and conditioner... I can't afford to use the pricey/good stuff as I'd go broke keeping all of our hair clean
:lol::lol::lol:

(THANK GOD hubby has short hair haha)

So for cheapies, those are my choices.
If you have the budget that permits, go to the salon products.
I know I would if I could.

PS: as for the autograph.... drag your butt over here to Montreal and I'll have YOU sign a few autographs for ME hehehe
giant

well unless you are a heavy product user , you shouldn't be using a ton of shampoo no matter how long your hair is. The scalp is what is needing the cleaning not your hair.
And shampooing curly hair it is even less shampooing.:)

I'm not a hair proffesional.. but that aside, I listen to my hairdresser. The products i use are recommended by her and thankfully i can get them at my wholesaler.. I have and do on occasion use a brand that i get through a catalolouge, but i figure this woman knows what she is doing and my hair has never looked better!
On a side note, I buy supermarket shampoo and conditioner for my boyfriend.. because he works with engines and would use a ton of my stuff.. he doesnt care so neither do I.. BUT if you pour his conditioner in one hand and mine in the other you can see exactly why i pay more for mine and why its better.. his is like water.. mine is thick..
Listen to the experts and you wont go far wrong

I do use a 'syrum' (anti-frizz, you should SEE how pouffy I am without it EEKS:eek:) Since I wash only every 3 days... I wash it twice, THEN I gotta bring it down the length to remove the syrum which as has built up and occasionally, some mousse or whatever... As for my girls.. I worry about headlice at school. So they're done every 2 days. Tea-tree oil and lavendar essential oils are added to a spray bottle of water that I use when I braid etc their hair every morning.
But you're right... it is primarily the scalp and don't want to 'dry out' the ends either.

I'm not going to recommend anything because I've actually not noticed much difference between shampoos (and I have spent a fortune on various recommendations bought from hairdressers as well as over the counter products).

Just try lots and see what seems to suit you best. What suits someone else won't necessarily suit you anyway, a lot depends on your hair/scalp type. I've heard that Pantene contains a lot of wax  so maybe that's one to avoid especially if you're oily lol!

eeekkk!!! Pantene!!! I'm more scared of that stuff than I am a spider.....At least once I've hired a hit man to kill and dispose of said spider I am assured it will never come back.
