Best way to put in dip dye hair extensions

Hi all, I'm not a hair geek but I do have hair extensions put in.

I'd really like dip dyed hair. My hairs black and I'd like bright pink or purple tips. After reading other threads I figure it's best to get a lighter hair colour and dye that the colours I want.

But my question is this, do I get the extensions dyed before or after I put the hair in?

If I dye the extensions first won't it look funny? Will the dip dyed bit be all over the place?

Wanted to get some replies then speak to my hair extensions girl. I'm due a fresh set soon.
