Black to red?

Hi, a friend of mine has been dyeing her hair black for a while now, but is thinking of going red. I have said to her I think she would have to have it bleached first( im not a hair professional just going by my own experience) is this correct or is there another way she can do it as she is worried about the bleach ruining her hair?
