Hi all,

After offering all aspects of hair and beauty for the last 3 years i've decided that what i'd really like to do is specialise in nails. I just don't seem to get excited about other services the way that I do with nails (i'm pretty much obsessed i think :o)

My question is, is it realistic to expect to make a good living from just doing nails, how do you other nail techs fare?

Any tips and advice would be much appreciated.

I have been doing hair for 30 years (& due to repetitive strain I trained to do nails) & nails for 6 years.

I make twice as much doing hair as I do nails but then it took a lot longer to train to do hairdressing.
It depends on what you call a good living.

Thanks, I'm not looking to make a fortune (although it would be nice :)), just enough to cover my bills with a bit left over. More or less the equivalent of a 9-5 office job really.

I opened a little salon above a clothes shop a few years ago. I work alone, doing mostly nails, then introduced sp lash extensions. I don't do anything else and do very well with both, but especially nails

Can only answer based on the fact I live in the U.S.........absolutely. Depending on how much you put into it and market yourself.

I have done very well out of nails! :green:

The key factor of success in your business is not what you do it IS YOU and how you do it.

If you treat nails like a little hobby, it will stay a little hobby. If you treat inail technology like the profession that it is, then you can go very very far with it.

It is as much of a job managing your career path, as it is to work at your career! Education and your growth from that education is the key.

You need to have a possible few leaner years behind that table while you really learn the ropes and continue learning at least once a year ... That will make your business a success.

Competition is perhaps challenging for those who want to put themselves and their ego into the hands of others!! It never appealed to me personally, but I loved training others to win :green: I don't think any of my 60 or more winners, would say it made them any money, which is after all why we work.

Then the decisions come along ... Do I go further and get into the education field, the distribution field etc. OR do I stay in the salon and manage it or rent space to others or both? You can be as successful if not more so, managing a good salon business as you can be working behind the table yourself

Whatever you choose to do, nails is a great profession to be in. Creative, challenging and fun as well as being lucrative. I'd say nails is the perfect combination and never ever boring.

Thank you so much for your replies you've really helped me to make up my mind - i'm gonna go for it.

Geeg i'm used to lean years so a few more aren't going to do me any harm, it'll be worth it in the end lol.

Also i've just rang a salon who have a nail desk to rent and i'm going to meet the owner tomorrow - its funny how sometimes opportunities come along at exactly the right time, i'll keep you posted with how I get on :)
