i might have a place in my local college to a nail techniques course the qualification i would get would be a vtct. are college courses any good or would it be better to do a course with cnd?

Do not train at college to do nails, I did this and lost all my passion for nails. College lecturer was not a nail technician with a passion for nails, she was just doing her job. I wish I had trained at a proper Nail school. I went to NSI for a refresher course afew weeks ago which was funded by ILA and the few hrs I was there I was re-inspired because these are PROPER nail technicians who have been doing the job 4 years! I am now working from home and feel much more confident in my ability wish I had done this years ago-Instead of college! Hope this helps.

hi i have just done a couple of courses with cnd and they are great. You learn so much and have so much support and advice its like one big family. I would recommend cnd all the way.

I guess I may have been a lucky one with my course then. I am just about to finish up my NVQ 2 and have had an amazing tutor who really had a passion for nails and would talk to anyone she could about them, mostly being me as I was the only student who seemed to have the same passion.

I think college courses can be fine if you get the right tutor and are willing to put the practice in. Mine was a night time course and so it was expected that I would pratice and do my own coursework without them watching over my shoulders.

Having said this, I would love to train with CND, but all of the centres are too far away from me. My only way is with college at the minute.

Colleges are so hit and miss and so many of them are just not up to any sort of standard. With bigger classes and, sometimes, but not always, inferior products being used, it is difficult to progress if you have a passion for nails.

I would go the CND route, without a shadow of a doubt, you will progress more quickly, and more to the point, you will become skilled with good backup after you have done your training.

I don't use CND myself, but they are a fabulous company that will give you great back up and support which is very important to newly qualified girls and boys! :D

I started the college route for nails but stopped after manicure/pedicure. The tutor for L&P told us she was a hair dresser and trained in nails and beauty just so she could teach it. Said she did 2-3 sets of nails A MONTH to keep her skill!!!

At that point I thought to myself if I am going to do nail enhancements it will be with CND at The Fingertips Centre.

as the posters abouve have said, college is probably not the best route to take, I have trained at college for some things, but 80% has been private training with reputable companies, that specialise in their field. I think college lecturars often have a general knowledge in all the beauty treatments they are qualified to teach, but rarely are experts in any, I am not saying this is the case for all though of course, CND have a fantastic reputation and are experts in the nail industry, so would definaltely opt fot this option as opposed to the college route, good luck hth x

Hotnailsbysheri did u train at James watt college in killwinning by any chance??as I trained ther years ago and didn't find it a great course!! Although it was prob a diff lecturer at tht time as the usual one wascon maternity leave!!

hi i went to college had great tutor (who was nail tech ) got my nvq and health n saftey which last for 3 years which is worth havin more so if you want to work in a salon then done conversion course after for the product i wanted to use which i thought was best way for me xx

I trained at a local college to me & enrolled on a VTCT, and paid a LOT of money for the course, which IMO I have learnt more valuble information on salongeek than the 9 months I was at college. As said previously, it is down to the tutor. The tutor that tought us did not turn up from one week to the next, and witnessed her showing us how to blend a tip with 100 grit file & damaging the nail plate.

Not long after I finished, I converted to BRiSA & had a class at one of S2 Acadamies. I felt when I left that class that I was more inspired & felt more passionate & actually believed in myself than the whole time I spent at college.

Further more, I have completed further courses with S2 & will continue to do so too. From attending classes, The Event I & Event II, I would say that I have met or spoken to a few of the Educators & I have never had a bad experience.

I have recently seen some work from a girl who I took the VTCT with, she never went to take further training from leaving college but continued to 'do' nails as a hobby & all I can say is, thank god I found SalonGeek!!

i confused now !!! I have done both collage and private training with a couple of different well known brands, not cnd, I always read on salon geek NOT to do short course's ie a weeks course, is this not what cnd is ?

I was not impressed with my local community college course nor the product brands that they taught with, so I trained directly with Bio Sculpture.
