Hi geeks,
I was looking for a bit of advice for a client I have looking to change her colour. I have attached pics, the 1st one is the colour she arrived with, the 2nd is the colour I did as she asked for a deep brown with a hint of red and red flashes and the 3rd pic is the colour she now wants!!!:grr: I used goldwell elumen for the red flashes, its the 1st time I have used that product so I was wondering if any other geeks have ever tried to remove it before? Im nervous about doing this correction as she is looking for quite a change!! I did the colour at the beginning of march so the colour has washed up a bit and she has a regrowth of about 1 inch and her natural is a level 7, could I go straight in with a bleach bath over the elumen or would I need to use a colour remover? Thanks in advance!!

Hi!

You have a challenge on your hands! Elumen is one of the most difficult colours to remove particularly the reds/pinks.

Elumen comes with it's own color remover called return. That allows you to reduce some of the tone and can be used up to 3 times.

Bleach tend to make the colour brighter as the pigments stain the hair.

You will most likely end up with a pinky colour.

Hiya, thanks for the reply. I totally agree with you-this is going to be a tough 1!! Getting pinky tones is exactly what im worried about with this one!
I didn't even realise the elumen range had it own colour remover, its something we don't use very often, do you know does this remove the red tone completely or just reduce it so you can then go over it with something like a bleach bath or colour remover???

Colour remover won't work as Elumen is a direct dye. Bleach makes it brighter really.

Use the 'return' helps to fade the colour but no won't take the red out.

Elumen is a specialist product - lots of parts to it!

I would use the colour remover that comes with it before even playing with bleach. Do some strand test to determine how much of the colour comes out, always cover yourself this way when doing big changes like this before ever applying anything on the hair I would also advise her to use a clarifying shampoo in the meantime like head and shoulders as this will help fade the colour, then do another strand test to determine how much you need to left it out and if her hair can handle it. I would also say to her that it is not going to be easy and best done over time for a better colour/coverage and for her hair no point ruining her hair in the process and it looking horrible as its your work she is advertising lol

friend of mine had pink elumen put on a tinted base 5ish, can not get out it at all. been trying since February ish? she tried tinting over it, lifting it, colour removing it, no hope! she even did a strand test with 12% and it just went bright pink! not even a hint of it going away!

With the pinks and red it's REALLY had to remove, personally I wouldnt try to go blonde x

Thanks for all the replies! I am dreading doing this now!lol
I will try to order the remover & once I get it I will strand test to see what outcome I get.
Realistically what colour do you guys think I should aim for? I know for a fact she won't get what she wants & she's a client who thinks she can just pick and choose different colours every time she's in even though she's advised about what can happen when she's constantly changing her mind on colours!!!

I think you should just see what you can do with the remover hun then go from there once you know from your strand test. Don't stress yourself, she can't have something that's impossible to do just like that and if she don't like your advise then either refuse to do it showing her the strand tests and giving your evidence why and just explain that you wont be the one to ruin her hair so she either excepts it or goes somewhere else to pay a fortune for nothing or ruined hair lol least your name wont be mud. Its so hard when clients put us in that predicament and dont understand the colouring process

Thanks Claire! I was reading a few things online there about the goldwell colour remover cause I was trying 2 get a site to order it from & a few comments said that it only works within 24hrs of the colour being applied-is this true or just nonscence? Lol

Goldwell colour remover doesn't work on elumen!

Elumen has a separate reducer called 'Elumen Return'.

It's a gel you apply over the colour, you need to heat it for 30mins. But make sure the client is covered as the colour drips from the hair.

It works best the sooner after the colour is applied. But this one is for Topchic and Colorance only x

Hiya, sorry I wasn't very clear in that reply, it was the elumen return that I was looking up online. Do u think I should get her to start using a clarifying shampoo now or would just head & shoulders be OK?then when I get the return I can carry out the strand test.

hey love, I would maybe do the strand test first, I have never used elumen although I know clients that have had it. I will ask how they got it out, but luckily for them they had short hair and one of them dyed over it with box colour and I've been cutting her hair and don't ever see it coming through. But she is now a plum purple not blonde.lol. I can't see the harm in washing with clarifying shampoo tbh but I do know elumen is one of the best colours out there for lasting and think that is why they have there own range of the lock and removers as its all designed for the chemicals etc used in the products. Def get the remover and go from there and explain to her that its not going to be a quick process but you will do everything you can in order to get her to the colour she wants to go, so trying all the options.... least you have tried. If the remover needs heat then instead of standing there with your strand test in foil blow drying it, put it in an airing cupboard or on a radiator :) I will get back to you once I have heard from my client. And in the mean time try the remover as you can use it up to 3 times so fingers crossed and keep us posted with how the strand test has gone

Oh and as for the other colour remover you mention no point wasting your money and trying as it wont work and a lot of colour removers ness its effassor which is bleach based anyway only remove the colour if it has been on long and usually when there is not a lot of colour build up and they are used more for if the colour has taken to dark then you can use it after and take it to the level required. And listening to others it sounds like using bleach on the elumen lightens it rather then removes it so would make it appear and bright pink lol

I used to work for Goldwell and I would agree that you need to use the 'Elumen Return' on the hair before applying bleach - when you apply bleach it just makes the colour brighter. This will get as much of the Elumen out as possible, you can then use bleach on the hair. I would do a strand test first if possible as it does depend on the hair.

Thanks everyone for the advice,I'm finding it hard to track the product down from any of my suppliers so I'll order online & let u know how it goes!fingers crossed!!!

Elumen is a specialist product because of it's application and removal etc. because of this it's only supplied directly through goldwell not in wholesalers. Any product bought on the next or from an unauthorised source could just be old product x
