Need advice. A lady who lives near me has bought a gel nail kit online and now calls herself a mobile nail tech. She's not at all qualified.

1st I wasn't bothered that's her problem however now she's taken to approaching my clients as they leave my home salon saying she's cheaper offering shellac for £5 my clients have not gone to her thankfully as ive explained she is not insured etc. is there a way I can report her?

No unfortunately there's no governing body. Best you can do is educate your clients and offer a premium service. Some clients may move over and that's their choice but at least you'll be left with loyal clients who value your work

Do you know for sure she's not qualified or insured? It's a VERY dirty way to do business but, she might be in training or something?!

Tell her to bugger off from outside your property and advise that handing leaflets out outside a similar business makes her look quite desperate!

Approaching them as they leave your home salon? So she's just sat hovering about outside your house? I'd go out and strangle her, bloody cheek! Haha x

The not insured thing, again, regional. I've never had anybody use that as a reason to not go to someone....

BUT

I would be escorting my clients out to their car, laughing and "loving" on them the whole way (by loving, I just mean being personable, a little friendlier, you know--smiling, engaging the conversation, etc...) and here, we have a database we can look someone up by name and/or address. I would use that for sure. The database will tell me if her license status is in limbo, if she's even licensed, etc....

BUT

by license, I am assuming you mean nail technician (or manicurist) license? Because here, polishing does not require a license and there would be no one I could call if someone was simply polishing nails.

(The caveat: I am assuming by "gel kit" you mean gel polish like CND or ASP or Wave, Gelish, or Gelaze. I am not assuming you mean "the kind of gel you make pretty nails out of".)

So in short:

If she's just offering polish as her "mobile nail tech" thing: nothing can be done except maybe a cease and desist calling herself a "nail tech".

If she's offering actual gel services: well, I've a got a board of cosmetology I can call up. :D You guys don't have a licensing board? That would be the first people we call here.

That is really not nice for her to be approaching your clients.
Everyone has the freedom to choose where they want to go but it's about educating the clients you have to understand that not everyone who can draw can be a Tattoo artist.
Same for Nails Techs not everyone who can paint nails can be a nail tech. I'm still learning after Qualifying and I still want to learn more before thinking about the money I could be making.
If your clients leave don't worry even though it hurts just continue to make your work do the talking xx

I would be appalled if some woman approached me after leaving your house, having had my nails done. It would make her the last person I'd go to.

Keep you own powder dry. Look after your own business and ignore her.

Remember, people choose you for a variety of reasons. My clients don't come to me because I'm the best or the cheapest. They come because they like my company, my service, my parking, my environment.

Make them love you and they won't go elsewhere - and don't even think about reporting her etc. Give people like this enough rope and eventually they will hang themselves.

She told my client she was not qualified in any beauty treatments and that is why she is cheaper yet telling them that she is amazing at what she does. Thankfully my clients find this rather silly but it's the harassment of my clients outside my house that annoys me. They should not have to deal with her face to face selling pitches as they have come to me to be pampered and take some time out in their day to relax and have a gossip. She said she doesn't use CND but a cheaper shellac polish called CCO which is actually not shellac in the least its purchased from ebay. Thanks for all of your advice I think I will just continue my service as usual and rise above it and hopefully she will not Harass my poor clients. I did threaten to call the police if she did not leave my property this morning as my client couldn't even get through the door. Just don't get the cheek of her!

CCO is a chinese knock off of CND. :D

And as for the quoted--that right there WOULD have me calling police. She is trespassing on your property. Some things I would do (remember, I am in America, so these (unnecessary and bloated) steps actually work in my favor):

1. Get a no trespassing sign and place it prominently in your yard.
2. Make another sign that states "no bills of sale" or something similar are to be "done on property unless done by owner of property and HER clients"
3. Another sign that states "knowingly harassing my clients will warrant a phone call to the police for trespassing charges"
4. Another sign "Selling on this property not benefiting the property OWNER and her clients, is strictly prohibited".

Or one big sign to this effect. Yeah, it is overkill. Way overkill. But at least I can now say "I warned her". :D

Oh my goodness. She was actually at your door doing it? That's absolutely ridiculous!!

How can she possibly think that doing things like that will gain her anything other than a bop on the nose?!

I wouldn't dream of doing that at a salon let alone at someone's house! If you don't want to speak to the police, speak to citizens advice, they may be able to help. Or, just mention it to a CSO if you happen to see one close by at any point.

That's pretty appalling of your neighbour!
I don't know what to advise other than ask citizens advice. Mind you if she's using cheap knock off products and has no training, chances are any poor soul who uses her will want their £5 back when they realise a bad job has been done!
There was a girl by me doing acrylics with a £15 kit from China off ebay, the product didn't set, remained tacky like PVA glue! Needless to say she lasted 5 mins as a "nail tech". I would ignore her but if she does harass your clients u might want to contact the police.

That's crazy, she is coming to your house and trying to sell her services to your clients jeez what is wrong with her??

I would put my hose pipe on her if she continued 🙊

i must tell you, that the clients who are maying you a higher price for your qualified service will be suspicous of another dirt cheap technician and will stay with you for the most part. it is the people who would not generally pay a high price on a regular basis to get their nails done who will go to her.

Jeez, she sounds mad!

I don't envy you. I'd spend all my time trying to be the bigger person whilst really wanting to punch her on the nose!

She won't get anywhere and if any of your clients do try her, they'll no doubt be straight back to you afterwards.

Although I'd be tempted to do her bodily harm, always be sweet and kind to her; never let yourself be seen as in any way threatened by her. Post a "No Soliciting" sign on your property. Then pull her aside and tell her that you object to what she's doing, that it makes her look desperate and unskilled (which you know she is), and that if she comes on your property again, you'll contact the authorities.

If your concern really is for your clients, NailsbyToni's idea of escorting them to the cars is a good one. Also, if she continues, draft an email/note to your clients saying that you are aware of her and that although you can't stop her, you can inform them of why your service is a superior one. Detail your training, review your products, share your business philosophy. Use this as an opportunity to educate your clients. I can't imagine that she will last very long.

Just thought I'd update on this situation. I have gained 10 new clients through this woman. Apparently she mentions me to all her clients stating that I may be qualified but not as cheap as her. So these clients hearing this and after 2 days of her cheap gel cco polish chipping have contacted me as I am qualified and now lovey work. I have even gained referrals.

Goes to St cheap isn't always best quality over quantity is valued! My 6 years experience has paid off. Honest hard work and qualifications is the best way forward x
