I have recently started my own salon in my small village and business is going great(!) - but a couple of weeks ago I met a nail tech out in a social situation and we started chatting but she became very condescending about my work and talking to me like a child- I am only 22 and she is in her late 30's. She works in the same area as I do but she exclusively does nail art and such (don't get me wrong she is fantastic at what she does) where as I do everything from facials to massage and everything in between!

It has really bothered me as I would never be so rude! I spent 3 long years in college training and i am proud of what I have managed to accomplish but she has made me feel like a little girl playing shop and my confidence has gone down! Luckily I am still gaining new client and my old one are coming back regularly so I have no problems in my practise and work ethic!

She has just got me feeling so worthless!!

Don't let it bother you, she will be feeling threatened! I knew someone like this, she only did nails whereas I did 2 years at college and she told me the problem with being a therapist is that you aren't really good anything, whereas as specialising in nails you are the best! She is hilarious as I know through mutual friends that she is always asking how I am getting on and if I am busy! X

I agree with the previous 2 posters - she's some combination of jealous/insecure/threatened.

To be still bothering you two weeks later suggests she has maybe tapped into something that was underlying for you anyway, but it may well just be that you have only recently started up, so naturally not feeling 100%. She wanted to make you feel like this, so use the situation to understand why it is still bothering you.

If it is a case of first nerves with a new business then take it as a compliment, move on from it and know that your skin will thicken with these experiences. If she has tapped into something that was in you already, then don't waste anymore energy on her, but think about what it triggered for you and how you can overcome that.

All my clients are delighted with all their treatments so that is the most important thing!! Xx
