Hi all, I apologise if this thread is in the wrong place!
I'm doing my Nail training at the moment (city and guilds level 2) and I plan on doing either EZflow or CND afterwards to better my skills.

I'm also wanting to do some beauty courses such as eyelash extensions, tanning etc and a few others. The thing is, I'm a little confused about insurance...

As I understand it you need to be insured to work as self-employed and tbh I'd want it anyway because I think it's a great resource for when things could go wrong.

There are tons of companies that offer beauty training-but how do you know you'll be able to obtain insurance after training with them? I don't want to go out and spend hundreds of pounds on the courses when they may be comp[letely useless. Conversely, I can't really afford to pay for an NVQ-so I'm a little stumped.

Any help greatly appreciated! :D

I'm self employed and with salon gold, as long as the courses are accredited you should be fine but I'd check before you do any courses. I did nails with CND, waxing at a night course at college, then intimate waxing with ABC beauty and spray tanning course with Fake Bake all are fine with my insurance company hth xx

Get in touch with the GUILD ... they will let you know if your courses are accredited etc. Just ask the people who know. The GUILD are members here on salon geek and will be happy to answer any questions you may have AND you will get the right answers.

You need to check that a course is accredited by your insurance company before you book. You can find a list of Guild accredited courses on the Training Directory on Beauty Guild : Home - Beauty Guild or you can call us on 0845 2177 383.

Thanks guys, I just checked the one I was planning on going to and thankfully they're accredited :D
It's so damn annoying though, all these companies charging the earth for courses that are about as much use as a chocolate fire guard! It's a mine field for newcomers to the industry and I dread to think how much money people have wasted through lack of knowledge!

I also hate the fact that companies sometimes display the guild logo when their courses aren't accredited! (Or only some of them are!)

I was just wondering about courses through wholesalers such as Sally's and Adels? Are they "OK" or not?

Thanks again

If you do come across any of these please let us know so that we can deal with them.

Whilst I agree with you, I don't think the nail industry is no worse than any other. Nails has its fair share of greedy charlatans and you have to do your homework for sure which is why I always say go by recommendation.

Sally-type courses have been written about many times here on the site and not very favourably ... if you are doing your homework well, then read those posts.

CND have thousands of testimonials as to how reputable their courses are and it is clear to see the kind of technicians they turn out; the best in the industry.

Definitely, It's the beauty courses I'm looking at right now because I'm doing C&G level 2 in nails then upgrading to CND afterwards. What's business like in Spain? (If you don't mind me asking!) I used to live near Marbella but had to come home last November when the recession hit badly.

Hubby and I have decided we'll give it a few years before trying again. It was scary how much money we lost!

The nail business is great here where I am !! :D Have to say I would not live in Marbella for all the tea in China!! Try a different and much nicer area of Spain next time. Good Luck.

Well we weren't actually in Marbella, just close by. It was nice enough there just seemed to be a lot of people there who were only to happy to rip us off. My hubby wasa mechanic when we were out there but he lost so much money through clients not paying (and his employer not giving him a salary) that we barely had enough to come home!

The recession seemed to hit the Costa Del Sol really badly and when we came home it was a shock. People were complaining about no work etc and we were like...you wanna go live in Spain! Then you'll know how short on work you could be!
