Hi to you all,

I am hoping you can help demystify things for me...
I live abroad, although I am from the UK. I want to come over and do a fast track course (about 7 days)covering waxing/eye treatments etc.

I have been looking at training school and they say that they will issue a diploma upon successful completion of the course; these training courses are accrediting by BABTAC and the Guild.
The websites also say this will entitle me to insure myself in the UK (I understand it doesn't cover insurance abroad).

So what I am wondering is; if I do this course and get the diploma, can I join (as an overseas member without insurance) or do I need to do a long course such as NVQ etc to join BABTAC/Guild.

I obviously do not want to get my business cards printed up with false info; i.e. If I can join with one of these diplomas then I can put 'BABTAC member blah blah'. If not, I would put 'trained at a BABTAC certified school'.

Hope you can help! I am so excited about all this but I do want to do it right.

Best wishes

If you click on the navigation tab at the top of this page you will get a drop down,
choose the one that says members and look for a user called "the guild" real name Louisa,
send her a private message with your question and she will be able to give you the best answer as she works with the Guild company, hth

I'm not sure which course you are looking at, but if it is accredited by the Guild, then yes, you can join the Guild. You are correct, we will only be able to insure you to work in the UK, but you will be able to join the Guild as an overseas member.

If you are unsure whether the course you are looking at is accredited, PM me the name of the course and school, or take a look on our Training Directory. All courses listed here are accredited by us. Obviously, our accreditation is for our own purposes, I cannot speak for what BABTAC will accept.

If you need to know anything else, just let me know.

Hi

Thank you both for your replies.

The school I am looking at is listed in the Guild directory.

That's great news; obviously I wish to be correct and not mislead anyone once I start up.

Thanks again

Okay - from a BABTAC point of view, you CAN work overseas with our insurance, (with a couple of exclusions), as long as you are UK based and qualified of course. Our insurance does come with pre-requosites (such as the relevent NVQ or equivolent level to back up subsequent training courses), so you cannot just take a three - or seven day course with no previous experience. Any therapist overseas can become an associate BABTAC member however, which includes everything except insurance, hope that makes sense?

Thanks very much for that information re; BABTAC.

It really helps to know where I stand. I fully intend to only carry out treatments that I have been trained in AND has practised thoroughly. If I am able to display a 'qualification' or membership truthfully I will but would hate to mis-inform anyone due to ignorance.

I have discovered I can obtain an insurance abroad with a Guild membership & a diploma from a Guild accredited school. I intend to take out this insurance when I finally start up - after months of practising on every friend and relative I possess..!

Does anyone have any comments on my plan to have a self imposed practical experience period after training, before starting out? I think this would be best especially as I am unable to undertake a course such as NVQ's (which obviously would have been the best route).

This forum is wonderful by the way and I do hope us 'newbies' do not drive you all mad with our questions:eek:

Firstly, you cannot go wrong with any course accredited by either BABTAC or The Guild and you can not go wrong getting yourself insured with either one of them. They are the leaders in the field of beauty insurance and accredited courses and their support is second to none.

Ok, onto your question about a self imposed practical experience period. This is the most sensible way to approach it. Any course will only give you the tools and the basics to become excellent. The key to achieving excellence is to practise practise practise and with each treatment you do, you'll become better.

I must stress though that you should always start by training with the best in whatever field you are interested in, otherwise you will just become excellent at being bad at what you do.....because you won't know any different.

Good luck in whatever you do. xxx

Thanks for that Kim.

I must say that as a total newbie I have found it quite hard to choose a course/trainer.

I did of course look on the Guild website to choose an accredited trainer. I wish someone would set up a 'which?' guide to trainers!! A nice easy-to- use comparison chart would be great.

As it is, especially from abroad, it is just a case of trawling through loads; many do the same type of course, for the same type of financial layout and are mostly accredited by either BABTAC/Guild or both.

So once you have narrowed it down that far then it is just 'take a chance' unless you come across a recommendation/complaint.

But, I think I have now finally managed to synchronise flights/family commitments/course dates (after a couple of false starts and very helpful would-be trainers).

I am now totally fizzing with excitement; I have a huge tome that arrived from Amazon today; my bedtime reading for months to come. It is the NVQ2 by Lorraine Nordmann; but I am certain it will help me greatly and certainly can't hurt, can it?!

Thanks again and I'm sure I'll be on with more questions (do I hear groans:lol:)
