Hi there am fairly new in gel nails and haven't come across anything like this before but I removed a clients gels who has been having them done with me now for 4 months and her little finger on the top is a slight Brown colour also the ring finger looked like it was turning that way too only on one hand and no others were like it.
Any info would be great thanks in advance, please note I've already put primer on xx

Could it be a fungal infection? Tell her to get them checked at the doctors before you do any further treatments. X

Thanks for reply that's what I thought though the client is 15 years of age and I was taught that nail fungal was more common in older people??? X

Looks like it's just discoloration, does she eat a lot of curries?? Cuz that would stain her nails like this

Yeah tumeric does stain the free edge

I had something like this and she worked in a hairdressers and the dye had stained her nails x

It is very unlikely to be a fungal infection. Fungal infections are VERY VERY rare on finger nails and it doesn't look at all like a fungal infection to me.

Neither does it appear to be a typical BACTERIAL infection (which many wrongly call a fungal infection).

It looks like staining from something that has seeped between the natural nail and the overlay which was a bit loose in the zone one area. Could be anything from tea, to spices, hair dye or just plain dirt, makeup etc. Looks to have been trapped there and just stained the surface.

tHERE IS NO NEED TO FRIGHTEN THE WOMAN BY TELLING HER HE NEEDS TO GO SEE A GP.

I agree it looks like staining, a client of mine had yellows/brown staining, after some questions I found out she used a daily moisturiser with self tan in it!

Fungal nail infections can happen in any age group :)

I'm training in biomedical science, PLEASE come to the micro lab I'm currently doing placement work at and see for yourself how "rare" nail infections are. X

On fingers they are a rare occurance. I have worked in the nail industry for 35 years ... I can tell you exactly how rare they are on fingernails. The habitat is just not conducive for fungal growth in normal circumstances. It should not be the first thing that springs to a nail technician's mind if she sees something like this on one nail. And fungal infections of the fingernails would normally look quite different to this staining which I have seen many times ... simple staining of the free edge .. no infestation here.

Feet are a different matter altogether.

I remember I thought (as well as my mum!) That I had broken my nails and ruined them for good, when I had my very first set of acrylics on, and 4 of my nails were like this after I had been wearing them about 5 weeks, I panicked, but another nail tec in the salon came and had a look, she explained it that it was staining, dirt, fake tan, make up etc all building up in a slight gap between the tips and my natural nail...the young nail tech looked as horrified as me when she took them off!!

My dad has a fungle nail infection, and he has had to be referred to a specialist to treat it, it looks like a broken away flaking nail, like when you draw a caricature of a witches manky nails, all ragged and more yellow/beige colour.....the doctor though he must have trapped it/ripped it at work, and wouldn't have it that my dad just simply ignored it until it got that bad on its own, it's like really really thick, and flakey and really sore to touch....

I do not doubt your wealth of knowledge from so much experience in the industry.
But without knowing anything about the client, and knowing that most nail infections start with discolouration, I'd rather be safe than sorry. But I'm no expert, so I'll trust your word!
Also, I see nothing frightening about sending a clipping to be tested. But that's just me! X

Thanks for replys I would be very surprised at her age if it was a fungal and am I right in saying they're more common in men? Maybe I read that wrong!
After speaking to her she does Eat allot of her dads currys and as all girls her age use allot of fake tan but I will keep an eye on it, thanks again everyone xx

I get discolouration like that this time of year. I love pomegranates and find they stain my nails. No matter how much I wash my hands they stain.
