I'm not a hairdresser, but I am a weekly client at my hairdressers and always watch fascinated as Georgette cuts my hair and other peoples'.

One thing I do think is important though, the same as it is with nails, is to have a 3 dimensional 'eye'. IOW you have to be able to see it as you do it and to visualise the final outcome; then I think the angles will make sense and you will start to do it instinctively with practice.

I think if I were younger I would have loved to learn the art of cutting hair. Good luck with the course ... relax and enjoy learning.

thanks, its just getting me really stressed when most of the other students are cutting clients hair and getting on fine. i guess ill just have to take a chill pill and it should come to me.many thanks :green:

I'm sure some hair pros will read this and help you but give it some time as I'm sure they are all working flat out at the moment and do not have time to geek.

dont stress , it will come , as you progress , you will want to adapt those haircuts , but for now you do need to know the basics .
The angle is to allow for the fall of the hair, and distribution of weight, from short to long , graduating or following the shape of the head

it will come...i promise,
i remember at the start of my level 2 we had been taught the basic cuts and i really could not get my head around sectioning angles etc....especially uniform layer i found that to be the hardest cut....
this is what i did and it helped...work out in your head how you do each cut that has been shown you...then get a head sheet and draw how you get from a to b to c to d....like following a dot to dot .....draw your sections where you would start first and keep this head sheet with you, whenever you get a client at college get out that head sheet for that cut and have it in front of you so you dont get lost...also get yourself to the library and get out toni and guy classic cuts book, they have brilliant step by steps and again sit down with the book and a head sheet and draw the cut.....also i bought myself dvds i got hold of a toni and guy classic cuts dvd sat at home....again with a head sheet and watched the cut on the dvd and copied it on the head sheets.....and had my head sheet infront of my initially when doing clients at college.....once you get a handle on your basic cuts......one length, forward graduation, inverted layers, short graduation, uniform/round layer....and you have a routine of how you start and finish it will become clearer and then you can start personilising cuts....it didnt click until i was nearly level 2 complete then i had to refresh myself for level 3 as i felt i had forgotten the basics.....we all feel scaredwhen we cut and yes it does take a while but i tell you by easter you will think...hey i am getting there..i promise you:hug:

some peope are just unco.....

Maybe you are one of those.

Can you pat your head with one hand and rub our belly with the other?

If you are in fact UNCO, bail while you can, no shame in not being able to do something.

Just learn to do something else.

Out of curiousity... did they also teach the proper stance for each section?
It's where for each section of the head, you stand at a certain 'time' (imagine a clock around your client).

I can't remember the specifics (my course was 22yrs ago LOL and now I just do it naturally), but knowing the 'times' helped because if you were standing in the right spot for the right section, it helped with getting some (not all, because the angle at which the hands are positioned makes a huge difference too) of the angles right because your stance will directly affect how you hold your arms.

I'll have a look to see if I can't find my notes on that, buried somewhere.
If I find them, I'll post them.

Also, when in doubt, cut LESS.
You can always cut off more later, but you can't glue back on, what's landed on the floor.

It will come in time.
I can assure you that in the beginning, there will be a LOT of "oops".
It's natural, just like anything else, there is a learning curve and lots of mistakes to be made, before you get it right.

I find with students, they all struggle at first with cutting. After a while the light bulb switches on and you begin to understand the dynamics of a cut. If you understand WHY you are cutting at a certain angle, it will begin to make sense. Relax and keep practising and observing. It will click.

thanks everyone for the help. im still stuck on one length i think i just get to scared that ill make a big mistake and cant reverse it, thats why i feel more confident with colouring as 9/10 you can sort it out. and yeah i can pat my head and rub my tummy at the same time. thanks again everyone:green:

I'm in school myself and was scared to death of hair cutting. Sometimes I still think 'what on earth am i supposed to do?' but I think it's just nerves. The more practive you've got the better you'll be.

yeah i know its more fear than anything i think, im sure ill get over it soon, i hope! aha :)

this may not apply to you (as in you might not be as much of a wuss as I was lol!) but don't be afraid to ask for help from a tutor if you are confused, cutting is a hard thing to grasp, and as everyone says it will come with time. just don't do the same thing as me when I struggled with the concept of colouring, I didn't ask about it (I was 17 and just didn't have the confidence to admit i was struggling) and still to this day i really don't have much of a clue when it comes to this ( I don't do hair as a job anymore, and luckily when i did i could rely on record cards or ask my boss for help). Your tutor is there to help, dont stress yourself out about it, ask if you are unsure and I promise it will come in time :green:

Make sure you watch the stylists you work with. The more you observe, the quicker you will understand. If you don't work in a salon, ask the best salon in town if you can do unpaid work experience in return for some time to watch them work.

hi i
ve been doing hairdressing for 11 yr as well, and cutting is still not my strong point i dont do many cuts and i just cant get to terms with cutting.

I get all confuse and never really understand what section to do next and once the next section comes along i get lost i try and organise the sections never works but it always looks alright after, couldnt tell you what or how i done it,

cutting is always the scariest part of hairdressing but if you enjoy doing it then it will come jus need practise and most of all confidence.
