Hoping one of you computer geeky peeps can help me.

I have a domain name registered with Viritual Names and want to build my website with 1and1. I am unsure whether I can transfer this domain name to 1and1, there is the option but I cannot find anything on the virtual names website whether there is a charge for transferring out?

Anyone know?

I don't think there will be.
You need to make sure that when you registered the domain it was in your actual name, so that it can be transferred.
I am looking to do similar with 1 & 1.
I'm with Netbenefit at the moment.

Seanny's your man to ask here. He's a really lovely bloke & he'll try to help.

You have to contact the company you bought it from and ask for it to be transfered to 1and1. Mention the word Schlund and they'll know what you mean. xxx

Sometimes you can get away with keeping the domain with the provider you bought it from, but update the DNS to point to a different web server.

That is what I do; I buy my domain names from 123-reg.co.uk but update the DNS to point to my server at home.

Not sure how that would work with 1and1 though.

Hiya,

Thanks for that Ruth, there is an option to point DNS to 1and1, do you think this would be the best option then? Domain name is up for renewal in May so not sure whether to transfer it now and renew with 1and1 or leave where it is?

I guess that the best option would depend on the relevant cost. Is it cheaper to keep the domain where it is and update the DNS to 1&1 or just to move the domain across to 1&1 and be done with it? If the former, you may end up paying twice - for the domain registration from your existing provider, and the webspace from 1&1...

Not a good idea to let your domain lapse and then attempt to re-register it though; you may find that someone else cybersquats it before you get a chance to re-register (you may find one of those dodgy search engine spam thingies in its place).

I agree - if Virtual Names has great domain renewal prices, keep it with them and just point the domain to 1&1 via Virtual Domain's Control Panel. That way you can just renew it with that company when they remind you of the pending expiry (they usually do this within about 2 months of expiry).

If 1&1 are cheaper, transfer the domain to them - there is no charge to do that.

You can find more info on their website at Virtual Names - Online Help - it actually seems quite helpful - some sites aren't!

PS: If you choose to transfer the domain name there will be a slight disruption - usually just a few hours.

Nice one, cheers. I hadn't seen that page on their website.

R U really a roller girl then, like myself?

Glad to help Joe90!

Yes, I am a roller girl :) love to skate - though it's been raining too much to do it lately! Guess we need the rain. You're a skater too?

Dead right I am, I have been roller skating since my daughter was 5 years old and she is now 21!!!!

We are inside skaters though, so don't have to worry about the weather so much, just as well living in sunny England - lol.

I thought this was supposed to be simple!! ARGGHHH.

I have requested that my domain name be transferred to 1and1, now I have to fill in bloody forms and post them off before it seems I can start building my website. Is this right? I thought I would be able to start building but not publish without this transfer and if I can I can't find out where!!! It is driving me nuts.

That's a bit of a pain! Although I have found web hosting companies to be surprisingly bureaucratic about such things in the past.

I guess it's up to the webhost but usually they create the service (after they successfully charge you) & give you the login so you can get things started whilst waiting for the transfer. Until the transfer is done you will see your site at their domain eg, www.websitecompany.co.uk/~joe90/ Have they given you login & upload details yet?

PS: It's great to know another skater! I'd prefer to skate indoors but there are no roller skating rinks left in Sydney (and only 1 in the entire state) due to high insurance costs. :(
