Now dont all shoot me down but....

Apart from the obvious what difference does it make?

I have been trained to prep with cuticle remover/eraser but how do each make a difference to lifting and lasting if indeed they make any difference?

Do some systems require a dry prep & why?

Does anyone differ in prep person to person?

Just interested if anyone wants to shead some light on it for me.

Thanks Geeks xx

I actually always do a dry prep unless the person has a real overgrowth of pterygium, then I will use CND Cuticle Remover.

With just a dry prep, I never have lifting.

I'm sure you will get tons of answers though recommending using a remover. :)

Thats why i asked the question....I was thinking if i can remove everything dry then surely the nail plate will be less likely to have anything on it...

Hmmm i think this may get very interseting...thanks for replying x

I have always used a nail sanitizer. I find it works best for me especially if they have oily nail beds. :)

I always dry prep but that is the way i was taught,im sure Nsi have just introduced cuticle remover in there prep. I dont get any lifting and if its not broke I dont try and fix it so to speak. I use Young Nails products and was taught to dry prep.

When i was at college i was told cuticle remover would form a barrier on the nail :Grope: my argument was not if you remove it properly after wards. but it fell on deaf ears so to speak.

Hmm im really interested in this, i think ill do a set, one hand dry prep one hand wet and see what the difference i(if any) there is ..

Dry prep would cut time & product use down but if there is a really good reason aside from making sure that all the dead cuticle is gone i cant see the need for wet prep...

Am i missing something really obvious here just because thats how ive been taught to do it & dont know any different?

Are you dry prepping with just a pushie & scrubfresh??? Or is there more to it?

The only time I dry prep is on long term clients who have had several rebalances and so their cuticle re-growth is minimal. For every full set, without exception, I use CND cuticle remover (should be calling it cuticle away now I suppose but I think its such a crap name I cant bring myself to use it:lol:). Personally I think a cuticle remover removes visibly more non living tissue than a dry prep.

Also, it's my personal opinion that a wet prep is (or has the potential to be) kinder to the nailplate and surrounding living tissue. You only need gentle pressure to remove the cuticle once a cuticle remover has done its work, to remove it using a dry prep would need more pressure and there is a higher risk of scratching the nailplate. Perhaps I was put off in the past before I became a nail tech, but I always had dry preps done to me and they were uncomfortable to say the least. On the odd occasion she would cause little cuts in the eponychium by using too much pressure and although I'm sure not everyone works like that, I always think that whilst there is a product I can use to completely eliminate the risk of doing that to one of my clients, there's no point in risking it.

I dry prep all my regulars as they come every 3-4 weeks so don't have that build up...if its a new client with build up then i do a wet prep.

I always follow with scrubfresh.

I don't believe that using a cuticle remover causes lifting but i do agree that not removing it 100% can cause lifting.

Some companies train wet and others dry.

There are more than one way to do things and as long as we are doing them safely i would say its down to the individual and the system they use.

I echo what Bagpuss has said here, if you are working corrrectly and safely and know your tools, there is no reason why wet prep is any gentler than dry prep, except IMO. maybe in a case of overgrown eponychium (?dorsal pterygium?), in which case, I wouldn't be enhancing until the overgrown eponychium was shrunk back....regular manicures and cuticle oil/exfoliation will help this.

Yup - vanish. Although i do prefer CND Cuticle Remover. I always use one or the other cos i'm paranoid that i don't get it all off if i don't. Then give it a good scrub with nail pure plus.

thank you all for you imput so far .... I dont know why i thought about that today .... it just sprung into my head lol

I have tried both cuticle eraser & remover, going to give the dry prep a go.

You have tried the Cuticle Eraser? Isn't this an at-home treatment for the clients to use to prevent the overgrowth? I can't see this being too effective in prep work. Definitely the Cuticle Remover though - that stuff rocks!!!

Do a wee experiment. Do a dry prep on your next friend (probably not something you want to start explaining to a client!). Then use Cuticle Remover and see if anythng else comes off. This will let you know if your dry prep is effective. xx

I think Geeg uses Cuticle Eraser all the time. I'm sure she'll let us know when she comes back from her jaunt!

Cool - I love learning new tips and tricks!! I may have to try this. :)

my training was dry prep but i now use CND cuticle away and i will never go back to dry :)

I was taught to use the eraser from foundation...Then introduced to remover (away) so i was under the impression that its either or....Is this not correct?

liza why would you not go back to dry?

I have just found this easier and kinder to clients i was either to soft when removing or to hard :) now it seems just right and i prefer to do it this way and in my opinion its better this way :)

Yes I think it is either/or, so you've just confirmed ths for me. I use the remover though, I just think it seems more efficient (but that's just my opinion).

From what i have read on other posts the eraser can be removed with scrubfresh but cuticle away needs a soap/water mix to neutralise and remove it....but Yes either can be used.
