Hiya

I'd like to get the kids (10 and 12) electric toothbrushes for Christmas to hopefully make it more of a pleasure than a chore that I have to nag and nag about lol

I'm bewildered by the choice though, and don't quite understand if they are battery powered or if you have to plug them in somewhere to recharge?? In which case where cos most bathrooms don't have a socket do they?

Can anyone recommend a decent type/make please? And are they actually any good or a bit of a novelty thats going to end up in the back of the cupboard?

Thanks all.

You can get battery operated ones and rechargeable ones. They recharge through the shaver socket.

We have a Braun family one - one hand set and 4 heads.

You can buy the individual Braun battery ones in the likes of Tescos or check online.

My two (11) use them and havent got bored with them yet LOL.

I have a Sonicare toothbrush, which is a single handset & a UV cabinet that holds two heads. It's the best toothbrush I've ever had, but it did cost £180!!

Oral B are doing a sonic one for half price at £15 right now. I had a much more expensive Oral B sonic one (about £120) but this one seems to be just as good. I had to buy a new one as the recharge doesn't work on the old one. My dentist noticed a big change in my plaque when I first started using the sonic one. I'd certainly recommend a sonic one rather than just an electric one.

You can get an adapter so that you can plug the shaver plug into a normal plug if you don't have a shaver socket. It recharges overnight and lasts for about 10 days with me. Obviously if a whole family were using it it would run out quicker, but it's no hastle to set it down on the charger.

You get little different coloured rings to put on the different brushes so that each family member knows which is theirs.

phillips sonicare is the best and yes they makw a real difference your gums feel really tingly at first till you get used to it but nce youve had one you will never go back to a bog standard brush! they charge through the shaving socket as was stated befor they are expensive but worth it and they have a 2 min timer on them so you know whento stop!!

Boots have most of their electric toothbrushes at half price right now, so once you've decided on which one to get, head on down there a.s.a.p.

I have a philips sonicare and I can't stand it, the noise its soooo loud and it makes my gums bleed very slightly.

I'd much rather use a normal toothbrush. My sonicare is currently unloved, unused and probably collecting dust on my sink table  in fact it hasnt been switched on for over a year and they aint cheap!!

You might want to check your sonicare is working properly, it should only make a slight humming sound like a mosquito. As for the gums bleeding, I've not known that before, it should work upwards through the settings to get you used to it. That aside, if the gums are bleeding when brushing then my dentist always says that's a sign they are in bad condition; my partner used to have this problem & since using his sonicare he hasn't had bleeding gums in over a year.

Yeah I must admit I do need to go to the dentist but I know that I need a tooth pulling and I'm putting it off, I had a filling put in but its never really worked and every so often it aches. But I have had my sonicare since about 2001 hardly ever used and I'm sure its only got the one setting. The reason it sounds so loud is cos I have a bone anchored hearing aid which basically means any sounds in my mouth i.e crunching crisps etc sounds really loud so when I start to brush my teeth with the sonicare it sounds as loud as a dentist drill, and believe me the amount of times I say to myself anne just turn the bl**dy hearing aid off beforehand, but I forget every time   so I have given up on it, lol.

I have a battery operated one. I only got it a couple of months ago and only changed the batteries today. They last ages I was worried I'd spend a fortune on batteries but it's very economical. Dentists do recommend electric brushes but I thought my teeth were going to vibrate out my head the first time I used it.

I love it now though and it was only cheap. Less than $10.
