Well, the title says it all really!

I've had a few enquiries regarding childrens face painting and tattoos/glitter tattoos at parties. I've already checked with my insurers and they have said that i'll be covered offer both of these services due to the training and qualifications I already hold (although an advanced face painting course would be interesting!)

My question is....would you be charging by the hour or per child??

I think it would be easier to charge per hour as then there would be no confusion as to how many were paid for and how many actually had the above mentioned things done!

Also, would it be a good idea to have price options, as in -

a. face painting only is x amount
b. tattoos only is x amount
c. both face painting and tattoos on offer is x amount

?????

If it was me I would give them the packages. I dont think hourly charges are a good idea.
If I was hiring someone then I would want to know the exact cost and would probably think
the person charging the hourly rate would go as slow as possible to make more money out of me.

Thanks for your input...i'm feeling the package idea too!

The reason I was saying about possible having an hourly is that whenever my children go to their friends parties they all seem to run for 2 hours.

We recently went to one where the face painter charged £35 per hour, she knew how many children were going to be at the party so made sure her time was split evenly. When she had done all the childrens faces (who wanted it done) she then went round doing other little bits on arms, hands etc...

You could either charge by the hour or per child. It really depends on your experience and how long it takes to paint.

It may be worth asking the question here

With glitter tattoos I tend to charge per child as the costs of stencils need to be taken into account as you can only use them once.

Edited to add:

When quoting an hourly rate most face painters will actually tell you how many children they can do in an hour.

thanks for taking the time to reply.....
how many faces (roughly) should people expect a face painter to do in an hour??

xx

Difficult to answer because it depends on your experience as to your speed. Do you do face painting? How long does it take you to do a face?

Another way is to work it out per face. £2.50 - £3.00 per full face is the going rate (depending on where you are) and if you work out how many you can do in an hour, then you can work out your hourly rate. Unless you are experienced (and you would be looking at doing around 10 per hour) then I would go for charging per child. An alternative to full face painting if you are not too experienced and take longer is to offer cheek art. You won't be able to charge the full face rate, but you will get through more children in the time allocated. You could also combine this with glitter tattoos (which take no time).

On the kids parties we have various different packages from hair/makeup/nails etc to make and apply products etc and charge per party depending on the number of kids. For example a party for 8 kids for makeup, nails, nail art, body art & hair will take 2 hours and this is a set price for this style of party for 8 kids - we word it so that it is a party for upto 8 kids so if 7 only turn up on the day it will still be the same price. Obviously we have prices for different amounts of kids and the different packages but have found that no one has wanted breakdowns for costs per child, they just want to know how much 'everything' will cost and how long it will take and what exactly is included.
