Hi I need to learn about giving a facial and need training to do them, I live in South Shields, Tyne and Wear and would need the course to be an evening one The local college does not do them any information would be great.

I don't think you can do training just in facials. you would have to do nvq level 2 which includes facials but also waxing, tinting, manicure and pedicure and it would take you a year. i use to teach up until last year and unless its changed then thats what you would have to do. Hope this helps

My local college used to run a VTCT facial course so they do exist VTCT - Specialist Awarding Body Offering Vocational Qualifications > Qualifications > Beauty Therapy
Hope that link works if not just go to the VTCT website it lists all the qualifications its called Level 2 Certificate in Facial Massage and Skin Care and you can also search colleges hope this helps xx

No disrespect but a one day training course in facials
Total joke!!!So they can teach all the muscles in the face,neck and shoulders the massage routine,different skin types,diagnostics,After care and consultation,products and order of use all in one day!!!!that's one facial I wouldn't touch with a barge pole and an insult to paying unsuspecting clients to actually even call it a facial.I feel sorry for the person they rip off claiming that they can train you in a day.Crikey even a reputable product company like Darphin,Dermalogica or Decleor for example take several days to train you in their products/own massage routine alone,that's taking into account you already know your muscles etc so I just cant see how any company can claim to teach you facials in a day.Another money making scam I think and one to be avoided.

woah!!! Don't shoot the messenger. I was only saying there are lots of them out there. Accredited by both The Guild and/or BABTAC. I know of at least one well-respected Geek on here that runs one themselves.

I wasn't shooting anybody love,I was quoting you because you were the one who mentioned that they do a one day course and then went on to explain why I felt that a one day ,"course" for want of a better word would not be worth doing.Dont take things so personally. This is supposed to be a forum and people are entitled to their opinions on these issues.
There is a huge thread about short courses on nail enhancement training and why MOST people think they are a rip off,I feel the same about one day courses on facials.As I stated.Not all one day courses,i.e refreshers or add ons but to start from scratch I dont think it's good unless only wanting to work on friends and family.
I personally think that if you put someone in a treatment room with two therapists,one who had done a one day course and one who had done her/his full training,covering everything needed,that this would stand out a mile.
This wasn't a dig at you,I was merely giving advice to the poster who asked about one day facial training.Hope that clarifies things:hug:

I don't care whether people do a one day, one week or one year facial course. I suspect there will be people on this forum who will take offence at your comments however.

I think that the content of the training cannot be matched between a one day course and a long term one. You cannot possibly have the experience and knowledge retention by doing a one day course in relation to all the different skin types and conditions that you will come across.
With practice some people do get proficient at facials but it is the underpinning knowledge that is vital. If you start with a one day certificate you cannot be a facialist but if you are hungry for knowledge and training you will eventually get to the same place.
If you have done FT courses it does feel an affront when someone doing a one day course calls themselves a therapist, so I can see why it annoys them.

Do you really think that in one day you expect to learn about everything?????
There is no way after a day you can advice clients about their skin,,, Why take the time to do one day why not a proper course that teaches you everything you need to know,,,, I'd like to see what clients think when they know you have olny done one day!!!!!!!

I agree with you Babsann, if I had done it again, I would have prefered a weeks course.
I spent a hell of a lot of time studying though, I wanted to know everything I could before doing treatments. Maybe thats different from a lot of people who do those courses and start charging straight away (I know of a few from around here that did this), but I felt that to do the best I had to study and find out as much as I could and practice loads before charging and working on the public.

This is really getting silly now. I wrote one sentence with information only and it's caused all this. I really don't think that I am the one taking anything personally. I am not the one making all the wild claims and protestations.
Whatever training people do or do not want to have is their business and they have to live with their decisions. I would be pretty annoyed however if I was one of the companies you were making potentially libellous comments about.
Everyone is absolutely entitled to their own opinion, that is pretty much a given. Sometimes I think other emotions are hidden behind opinions.

Personally I don't agree with one day courses especially in facials. At the end of the day there are more and more people training in the beauty industry and the level of service clients expect now is above and beyond what it used to be so if you want to be top of your game and train with the best products you need to be qualified to nvq standard.
As mentioned before a lot of the big names have a minimum of 1 weeks training just to learn the products and routines, if they can't even cram product knowledge into a day how on earth these short courses fit the whole facial routine, diagnosing skin types etc into a day I will never know.
Its worth bearing in mind that some skincare companies won't let you open an account or train with them without a minimum of nvq II.
Im not going to deny that there are some totally useless nvq qualified therapists out there but that is more a problem with them not the training. There were some girls I went to college with that just couldn't do facials, we all had the same training but they were hopeless.
I might just be being dense here but i really can't see how anyone even if they are an absolute wizz can learn all the theory and practical in one day then start performing facials with only feedback of friends and family to rely on. At least at college you practice on everyone and get constructive feedback, eg, the massage to light, felt to rushed, incorrect products used for skintype, the list is endless.

Excellent measured and balanced response - Thank you. I think you raise some very valid points. Can I just ask one thing (am hiding now as I don't want to kick off any more arsey pm's today!) did the girls you said couldnt do facials pass their course? If they did, then I guess it must be a problem with the training provided i.e. a standards issue, in addition to the girls themselves.
