As part of working towards an NVQ3 in Nail Services at college, I am being trained to do both L and P and Gels.

We've been doing l and p since the beginning of term and I'm working really hard to get good at them but with gels (which we started yesterday) the penny just seemed to drop and I got much more of a feel for it than l and p.

Now I'm not saying that one is easier than the other as neither can be mastered in any ammount of time that is too short (I certainly need to work at both until I am at an assessable standard) but yeah, is this pretty typical to be drawn to and be able to relate to and connect with one medium more than another (in this case, I can see myself becoming a gel girl rather than an l and p girl given the choice)

what do you guys think? over to you...

Hi, yes I think this is normal, when I was in college people definatly prefered one to the other. I myself love L and P, I work better with it and my nails are nicer with it too. I think you need to be able to use all systems as you said, but you can specialise in one. xx

When I took my courses, I really wasn't sure what the market would demand around here but figured I should take two techniques (here in Quebec, my school taught gel and resin/powder -- is this the same thing as what you call liquid/powder?) and be ready for either.

Acrylic wasn't an option -- my school doesn't offer it.

Turns out, I work more with gel for several reasons:

  • way more demand
  • much prettier results
  • complete lack of odor or allergy triggers (resin has actually given me eczema and I've heard other techs say the same)
  • just plain more FUN! Lol...
Of course, I offer both options to clients and explain the differences between both but as soon as they hear that resin is more likely to aggravate any allergies or skin sensitivities they have, they end up choosing gel for themselves.

Apparently the Light Elegance gel instructor (I heard) had the same experience. Started out doing mostly resin, HATED gel, then gave it a go finally because her eczema kicked in, fell in love and now gel is all she does and teaches.

Er...which often makes me wonder if I spent hundreds on the resin course for um...nothing...lol...:irked:
