Hi all!

This time next year i will have finished Uni, however I've always wanted my own business doing lash extensions, nails and make up whilst specialising in the wedding industry. I was just wondering what is the best way to go about this, do I do a level three beauty therapy course then branch out? or do i just take specific courses for what I want to offer and start my business from there?

Any advice on this would be great

I think you'll find that most decent courses expect you to have a minimum of level 2 or 3. I would certainly recommend at least doing level 2 (you can't go straight in at level 3) and then look for really good specific courses for anything you are missing. (Nail extensions and eyelash extensions probably).

Level 2 Beauty Therapy will cover basic manicure, pedicure, waxing, facials, Lash tinting, brow shaping/tinting, basic makeup application and anatomy and physiology and depending where you study, possibly some extras (for example, City of Bristol College offer gel polish, spray tanning and lash Lifting I believe?)

Level 3 can take different routes though. Mine was body massage, facial and body electrical, level 3 A&P and our extra was nail enhancements (hard gel and L&P), but for what you want to do, level 2 may be enough.

Or you could go down the level 2 and 3 Nail Tech route and then do separate makeup and lash extension courses.

Whatever you decide, Do your research on any course you look at and check reviews and whether you can get insured with all the main insurers afterwards. You want courses with lots of hands on practical work and preferably support after the course is over if you need it, especially for nails and eyelash extensions! It takes A LOT of practice to perfect!

My daughter has been looking at Bristol Beauty School for their makeup courses, even though she is just about to finish a level 3 Makeup course at college. X

thanks so much for your reply! I've been looking at Bristol Beauty School too and think I may do course with them whilst in my third year. And I agree think I would like to get at least a level two first but I don't think City of Bristol College do the level two part time x

Might be worth checking with City of Bristol College to see how many days the Level 2 course is as a,though they state "full time" , they're usually only a couple of days a week! (My daughter did Level 2 at Weston last year and it was only 2 days for the actual beauty course. I did Level 3 at Weston last year. Alongside my part time job and that was less than 2 whole days a week!). X

Another thought ... if the college course still doesn't fit in, have a look at Elite Beauty Academy which is run by a lady called Wendy Jessop and is based in Banwell, which isn't too far from Bristol (closer to Weston super Mare though). She does a Level 2 NVQ course and can tailor the days of practical work to suit you. I've done a few refresher courses with her before I started doing level 3 as I'd had quite a long break since doing level 2. X

Yes, I can voucher for Wendy, knew her well when we both lectured in beauty at Weston.
