I did my first rebalance on my girfriend yesterday. I try to get it perfect but OMG it took 4 hours. Way too long! I found it was a mission to find the new seal and blend the acrylic with the natural nail. I used a 180 abrasive.
Can anyone give me some advice. It was 3 1/2 weeks between the original application!

Hiya .. I think the easiest way to re-balance lies with the initial application....so when you first do the nails, make them thin and blended in Zone 3....this not only gives a lovely finish and helps prevent lifting but also makes re-balances easier.

When you re-balance don't make hard work for yourself...only remove what you have to and only replace what you have removed.

I start with a 180 and work down to 240 in zone 3....if you have lifting in zone 3 then this needs to be removed (also helps to eliminate future lifting by looking at your prep/application again) To remove lifted product you must file behind the lift so that you are not chasing the line. Doing this will create a blended seal of non lifted product and the lifted part will simply come away from the nail. If you file on top of the lifted area it will just loosen any surrounding product and make it worse.

I also start with the 180 and go down to the 240. I think if I just used the 180, after the initial strokes I would be so consious of hitting the natural nail that I would work really slowly. Dropping down to half way through 240 just gives me a little bit of confidence that I am removing less with each stroke.

I wouldn't worry too much about it taking such a long time......it's your first one. Remember how long it took to do your first ever set of enhancements? It's the same thing. It will get easier and you will get more confident.
Plus remember that 3 1/2 weeks is a little more time than the usual rebalance, so there will have been more work to do.

Good luck with it and just enjoy the fact that you produced a beautiful result!

try to catch them for rebalance at 2 - 3 weeks, there is far more chance of it being a long job when its been left over that time.

your timing will come down when you get better at your application as there will be far less remedial work for you to do.

you are finding it difficult to find a seal because you have lifting. most lifting comes down to less than thorough preparation. the more prep you do the less filing you'll do when the client comes back for maintenance.

if you go to the navigation bar at the top left of the page you can select tutorials and see what is neccessary for thorough preparation. i guarantee this will make a difference .

Was there a lot of gossip an conversation?? When I do nails for any of my friends or family I am always surprised how much longer it takes me, then I remember all the cups of tea and stopping here and there for a juicy bit of gossip or to comment on something they might be watching on the telly . honestly, I really drag my feet on them. I hadn't thought of that but it still would have been 3 hours. All this info is fantastic. Thanks!
