Hi

I am going to be doing a french manicure on someone in a week or so. I haven't done one before professionally. As much as i am worried about getting a good straight edged line, i suddenly thought do you only apply the white to the line of the natural nail that is there, or do you make it look bigger if they hardly have any length to their nail?

Also, can anyone recommend a good brand for French? I have got Orly for now, is this quite good or is there a better option?

Thanks

Orly is a really good polish. I use Essie's Marshmallow for my white tip.

My personal opinion is: if they have little free edge do not make it look bigger. I think that makes the french look fake. The prettiest french's are the ones with less white and more nail beds, IMHO.

Best of luck to you! :)

my favorite polishes for french are OPI's Alpine Snow and Passion.
i agree with deanosnana, i think the longer nail bed look is gorgeous. if you're worried about getting a nice smile line, use a polish corrector pen to define the line. i use one myself when i do french mani's. then i apply a VERY VERY thin layer of Passion *its a really light pink color and gives the finished product a softer look* then of course apply topcoat.

all in all, i love OPI Alpine Snow & Passion, and using a polish corrector pen for some fabulous smile lines.

I use OPI as it a good brush and easy application, but I like bridal's bouquet it's just a little softer than alpine snow (very white) and then use a pinky or peachy tone. I like passion or bubble bath .
I use base coat first then 1 coat of pink and then 2 coats of white and 1 coat of pink again & top coat . It will take a good 5-10 to touch dry in total about 30 to try completly

i agree dont make the white wider it gives the illusion of making the nails look stumpy IMO, you could curve the white slightly more to make them look longer and makes them look really elegant HTH.
I use spa ritual french tip its got a lovely thin brush you can be really precise with it and they do a great range of pinks good luck xx
