Hi geeks
I'm just interested to here from any of you that work full time and do the whole beauty thing on the side.

I work part time in a spa/health club, which is really only temping. I absolutely LOVE it. I'm just left there to my own devices to get on with my treatments and that's how I work best.
I've basically been waiting for someone to leave so that I can go full time. And that has happened today. Not sure of the hours yet as I have a meeting with my boss on Friday, but I know it will be full time. At least this will be full time guaranteed money and wont matter to me if clients cancel or not.

The thing is , I have put so much time and money into my mobile beauty business and I also enjoy doing that too. Although it's good money, it's not guaranteed and has it's quiet times.

I will be doing both and yes ...I will probably be knackered but hey ho, that's life.Wont get anywhere sitting on my bum

Just wondering if any of you Geeks are in this situation and how you find it?

Well i have done the complete opposite ,as i left Grayshott on Sunday, and did the right thing:eek::green:...however it was such a big spa,and with over 40 treatment rooms, and tiring treatments it was strangling me,as i had relinquished my role as Decleor specialist...not by choice...long story...lol

I run my own mobile business...mainly nails and waxing,i wanted to get back to being self employed...and i am so much happier...i wanted to "give back" myself to my loyal clientele who stayed with me when i gave up my high street salon over a year ago...maybe working in a smaller spa will suit you though...i was just fed up with working on over 10 clients a day,and gaining no respect.

So what i am saying is,everyone is different...but if you want to put your heart and soul and give it some guts, and reading your posts as i have it sounds like you have the passion and drive,do what you love at being self employed.

Thank you for your kind message hun. I actually find the mobile thing more tiring, lifting and carrying everything. I can come home from the spa and still be full of beans. It only has 2 treatment rooms and 3 therapists. I guess I will just have to try it and see how I get on. Most of my mobile clients are in the evening so that shouldn't be a problem as I will finish at 6pm. It would be such a shame to not do one of them because I love both!
So watch this space ...there could be a bit of moaning to come from me yet. :) Lol.

speaking as someone who has done both, I think your spa job sounds ideal if its a small place.

its tough times for people at the moment, and you have to consider, do you want a guaranteed income, no stress, and work regardless how many people are booked in.
or
do you seek a challenge? do you work better at creating your own work, get a kick out of a new client or a recommendation?

I personally have done both, and still do contract work, but I love the unpredictability of it all. I bore very quickly of a " captive audience ". for example: I've just been given a year contract to do 3 hours work once a week. I have done 3 weeks so far, and it is great to know that the money I earn covers most of my usual bills, BUT, I know within weeks I will start getting bored. See, I thrive on going out there and getting. I would rather 2 IN A BUSH THAN ONE IN THE HAND!

I really do think your possible full time job sounds brill though.

Thank you for your message hippy chick.
I think the guaranteed wage is definately pricking my ears up. My poor boyfriend is forking out for most of the bills on his own as most of my money goes back into my business. So at least my wages can go towards bills and training. Then my mobile work money can be for me (to spend in River Island )
They do a lot of treatments that I am not trained in so will get me trained up for free. I can also use the gym for free and take my lil one swimming. So that's handy.
I do know what you mean about getting bored though. That is exactly me. I tend to be ok as long as I am seeing the £ notes at the end of the tunnel though.
I will still work hard at my mobile business and the fab thing about it is, if I am completely knackered I can book a night off.
I am so excited, just have to see how it goes. Thank you for your fab words, will let you know how I get on  xxx

Since you already work at the Spa and are aware of the pace they work at, I think you should go for it. (I understand that some of the big spas work their therapists like donkeys and it would be unrealistic for them to have outside work.)

I am sure your mobile clients are getting a great service from you so perhaps explain to them about the transition. Maybe keep your mobile clients to a minimum until you get into the swing of full-time working.

Good luck!:)

Great advice hun and I totally agree about keeping them to a minimum. I will usually break my back to fit them in but think I may just have to say 'well this is the slot I have' take it or leave it sort of thing.
It's a great place to work. Each therapist is allowed there own time slots for how long they want to do a treatment in (within reason) as everyone works different. I can do the treatments exactly how I want them which is good and I cant complain as I haven't even got my level 3!

Sounds like the kind of spa I would like to visit never mind work in!:)

I am sure they enjoy a good reputation too which will reflect on you.

Hey Hunni

I work full time as a PA which is manic, but also do nails in the evening and weekends. I love it and yes i am busy and i do get tired but i would'nt have it any other way. I don't think i could ever go mobile on a full time basis as i think i would miss my salary to much. x

I gave up a PA job in the city with a major blue chip company and made the transition to do nails full-time in Essex.

It was a real struggle in the beginning and quite scary. I started off reducing my PA work to part-time position in another company and doing nails part-time and then once I had a successful client base I managed to easily match (by only working 4 days) my PA salary which was rather lucritive.

So it is not necessarily the case that to do nails or beauty you have to compromise on earnings. Perhaps in the beginning but not long-term, especially if you can offer a high standard of service.:)

Hi Kylie

I use to do both work full time in a salon and do mobile work after I had finished, sometimes as late as 9PM i would go out and do a client. I loved doing mobile work but it does get tiring. I have since opened up my own salon and now all my mobile clients come to me( I do give them a discount) and say they love it and it is much more relaxing. I only have one lady that I still go to and that is cos she does not drive and only has a little bit of waxing every four weeks.

But if it suits you to do both i would recommend it as you can take time off and as you said you fit them in around you.

Kirsty
