Hi,

can anyone offer me some advice on greenies!!
A mum down at the school was going to come to college to have acrylics puts on, but i saw her today and she said she used some 'glue on' nails the other day and every nail on one of her hands is green - and i mean properly green!!
They are a really dark shade - almost looks like green paint! Obviously she has had / got an infection but can anyone tell me what she could do about it?
I advised her against using the glue on nails and explained how infection can occur etc etc but is there any treatment she can get to get rid of the greenies?

Hi

My sister who is a nail biter wore stick on nails grrrr!! and I noticed green under her tips, so I bought her some Dr G nail clear solution and she used that and it cleared.

I have heard tea tree oil can help, but I have never tried it.

unfortunately greenies do not go away, they have to grow out, the only thing i could suggest which is what i was taught, is to remove the nails and spray them with some antibacterial stuff to kill it off, it will lighten as it moves up the nail but she just needs to let the air get to it, as it loves warm, moist places and having nails on is not going to help.
you should know when it is killed off as it should stop getting darker and just grow up the nail if it starts growing downwards it has not been treated properly.

hiya, soz, my internet has been down the last few days! Thanks for the replies, I should be seeing this woman at school on wednesday so ill see how she's getting on, she is 19 wks pregnant as well so i think the best thing for me would be to advise her to see her doc? I did tell her about stick-on nails many times before but her attitude has always been 'its ok - ive used them loads of times!' I think she will prob take me a little more seriously now as she seems totally gutted by how her nails look now! She hasn't got the stick-ons on now, when i saw her she had removed them all and was left with very dark green fingernails..

Would you not say then that in general when there are alot of greenies present that its best to refer to the g.p? This lady has them on nearly every nail on one of her hands and it was a really dark shade of green!

Pseudomonas bacterial infection can occur between the natural nail plate and the nail bed, and/or between an artificial nail coating and the natural nail plate. Many people have been led to believe that the classic 'green' discoloration of this type of infection is some type of mold. In actuality, mold is not a human pathogen. The discoloration is simply a by-product of the infection and is caused primarily by iron compounds. Pseudomonas thrive in moist places; it feeds off the dead tissue and bacteria in the nail plate, while the moisture levels allow it to grow. The after effects of this infection will cause the nail plate to darken and soften underneath an artificial coating. The darker the discoloration, the deeper into the nail plate layers the bacteria has traveled. If the bacteria has entered between the nail plate and the nail bed, it will cause the same discolorations and may also cause the nail plate to lift from the nail bed.
