Hi guys, ive been thinking about adding some length to my hair in the form of hair extensions, although im a hairdresser myself I have never really had alot of experience of the permanent type of hair extensions. So i would really like to hear from anyone who has had hair extensions. Are the glues type or the one that are attached by little tiny braids better, how long before you can see the regrowth, how long do they stay in for etc... are they easy to care for?

ive nvever had extentions myself but my hairdresser reckons they really do ruin your hair - as they need to be soo looked after and that every extention has to be separated when washing, drying etc - if i were you pet - let your own hair grow - i know its a pain - but you would be soooooo glad you did

Hi!
I've had extensions, but where I'm from, we call them "tracks". They weren't longer than my hair, actually, they were cut and layered just like my hair, giving it some really great thickness! Mine were glued in, but the kind that are sewn in are better. They are a bit time consuming to put in, but the end result is fab!!

Hair extentions or weaves is a wonderful way to change your hairstyle without actually cutting, dying or doing any thing permanant to your own hair. I have had different types of extentions, right now I have braided twists that I did myself over the 4th of July weekend. I have also had weaves that were sewn in and those that have been glued in, I personally don't like the glue because it begins to slip and fall out as you begin to put oil in your hair and it can take clumps of your hair out when you a removing it, if you are not careful and don't really know what you are doing. By far for me the best would be the sewn in kind because you natural hair is somewhat protected and you can style the weave any way you choose you can go really short or really long and have a different color altogether, you can still oil your natural hair without having to worry about a track slippin out and you have more styling options. I've done both on myself also, it's not hard at all.

Hope I've shedded some light for you....

Hi, my daughter went to the rainbow room in glasgow and got the hair extensions with clips seemed a great idea at the time they keep forever take em in and out when u like etc but she seems to have had more probs than most as the clip keeps snapping they cost her £350 but i checked out the website where the rainbow room buys em from and they only cost £150 but unless you know the colours you want its a bit tricky to choose, but i do think they look much better than the glued in ones which can look a bit icky after a while, and i do know a hairdresser that just bought the hair and then sewed the clips in herself much cheaper too wayyyyyy cheaper, anyway thats my thoughts hope you find what your looking for.

my mum had them last year. beware if you have any hair extentions left and they say that they will keep them untill next time, they WILL NOT.
my mum ordered three lots, she went in for her third lot one day and to her surprise they were not in the salon. the hairdresser said that they had been used on someone else and they couldn't do anything about it.

WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY

hi there

i had extenstions some years ago(1991) and they where done in aflecks palace in manchester it cost around 175 back then as the hair was synthetic and not human,,,,,

if i had realised this i would never of had them done as first they where heat sealed to my hair and as i have naturally curly hair i had extentions called cable curls.

Well i looked like i should be dancing with jackson 5 when i came out.

The biggest problem washing my hair,as soon as i did the curls disappered and i looked like drowned rat for 3 month until i could break the seal on the extenstion.

and after all that my hair had grown but it was so damaged it all had to be cut of again

My best mate has them - she's worn them for about a year now.

Cost her £350 to have them put in initially and about £50 a month for maintenance (replacing loose ones, lost ones, rebonding, etc.)

It's hard work, she's constantly having to think about what she does to her hair - she can't swim as chlorine ruins the bonds. She can use her hairdryer on hot as heat ruins the bonds. She can only use either the shampoo they sell or Redkin, all the other ruin the bonds. She can't wear a hat/cap as it ruins the bonds. She has to wash her hair every couple of days as natural oils...you guessed it...ruin the bonds

She's a high maintenance kind of chick, nails, hair, tanning, wraps, facials, etc. on a regular basis and it's kind of routine for her now, but in the beginning it drove her mad as they kept falling out for various reasons until she worked out how to wear them well.

I had 6 bright pink ones in a few years back and they drove me nuts  I couldn't wash my hair properly and give it a good old scrub as they got in the way, and I couldn't brush it properly as I always caught the bonds and it hurt like hell

Why not have a few 'fun' colour ones put in - they cost me about £20 for my six, they're done exactly the same way, and see how you get on with those before going for the whole thing?

The hairdresser i go to do extensions, they are called Racoon, and i think they are good. Well the lady who does them is very experienced and does agood job. You get all the racoon products to look after your hair. One girl i know has had hers done for ayear and her hair looks very natural, but she must look after them well as she works in the hairdresser. Dont know if this helps, but look for Racoon in your area.

I had glued hair extenstions....omg.... the were bad. when my head got hot the glue started to melt and everything was slipping and slidding.. i was told not to wash my hair too often cos it damaged the fake hair.. after about a month a sat picking my extensions out cos there was no other way of doning it.. 3 hrs and sticky hair and fingers not to mention a very sore head the came away, now i have grown my hair myself and am a happy bunny again!!!!!!!

YIKES!! See the key to taking those glued in pieces out is baby oil or oil sheen, any type of oil that will loosen the bond of the glue, you know oil degrades and wears away at that type of adhesive...like if you ever want to get a label off of a jar give it a good rub with some type of oil and let it sit for a while, it will slide right off, same thing with the hair glue...it's best to start oiling a whole day before you actually plan on removing them.

I'm no expert, but I've had quite a few weaves in my time, and experience is the best teacher!!

hi my daughters has extentions and i have just done a course on extentions they are great and wont ruin your hair if you look after them properly i reuse the extensions upto about 6mths some upto 12mths depending on how well thet have been looked after you do need to have them maintained about every 4-6 weeks (take out and replace extentions) due to regrowth i use wax tips but do the same maintaince for weaves or wefts i also do hi lites with extentions so why not have this done first just to see how you get on with them

i had racoon extensions about 5 years ago, they were gorgeous, looked natural, little bit of maintenance but compared to all the stuff i could do with my new long locks, it was worth every little minute and penny £350, i had the asian human hair which was very straight, oooh wish i could afford them again - dream dream.

if you really want them done, try to find somewhere that does cinderella hair extensions. you get a wider variety of colours and a choice of 100% human or synthetic. they are protein bonded to your hair (they are rolled into strands of your own hair)so no glue is used. they have to be proffessionally taken out but they are fab.

you can still use hair irons/straighteners/hairdryers (they wont melt when hot) and they look so real. you can get them curly/striaght and different lengths.

i'm saving at the minute so i can do the training to do them as an extra service. think Cinderellas a bit like the creative of nails except of hair extensions if you know what i mean

Hi...I had racoon extensions in summer 2003...but it was a nightmare trying to get the right shampoos for maintenance as they did not retail racoons own range (which I assume must be available). The extensions were glued in and I did love them but the bonds did soften, slid down etc and had the lot taken out about 4 months later. The hairdresser actually gave me the spare hair to take home and I had to take it back in when I needed touchups etc..so that was good. I had a half-head of extensions and cost me £350. Maintenance was charged at £40 per hour. When I had my extensions taken out (£74)...It didn't damage my hair..but they had thinned my own hair so much in order to blend in with the extensions that I was left with wispy ends which did disappoint me...I now want extensions to thicken my hair as opposed to lengthen it now!!!

You do have to use the proper shampoos, they weren't available when I had mine which was a pain! Separating the individual strands for washing etc wasn't too bad....just wiggle your fingers through your hair in the shower to make sure they weren't tangled and that was it. I blow dried, straightened and did all the normal stuff...just be careful of the bonded areas. It's a bit like nails.... you got to follow the aftercare and use the right products in order to get the best out of it....and also have someone properly trained to put them in correctly. You can get nailtechs who don't apply products properly or damage your nails I think it's can be the same with some hairdressers....I guess the more they practise at doing it the better they get, like us nail techs!!

Anyway.....in the end I decided I wanted to add hair extensions to my services so I did some research and as everywhere up here is racoon and as I was getting some feedback from people having same problems as I had experienced I decided to check out cinderella at one of the shows. I was very impressed so decided to go with them. They are protein bonds..they use pre-bonded hair which you can splice up if you need to have a lighter weight extension. The bonds are heated same as racoon but you can roll them between your fingers to form the bond on the hair(as opposed to using finger protectors)...I feel you are getting more control over shape the bond so elimate air pockets etc. They have fab colours to choose from too.

Also, we were taught that we should place a couple of extensions in the clients hair for a week to assess suitability as part of the consultation process.... I think this is a really good idea, especially if you are unsure if you really want them and also to see if the weight of them is ok....you will always shed hair naturally but you don't want the weight of extensions putting extra stress on your hair either.

Sorry for rabbiting on!!

I HAD A REAL BAD EXPERIENCE IN NOVEMBER, i was put in touch with a salon whos staff were and are brill , the lady who owns scandels in barnt green is the lead trainner for racoon. Extensions didi not reck my hair at all as there were done properly, i follwed there maintenace programme, as we do with nails!. When i had them taken out they were brill , if you are trying to grow your hair it gets you past that horrible stage where you want to have it all cut off!!!! I would suggest that that you call racoon and find there nearest qualified salon! good luck

I know this is a slightly dated thread but thought I'd give my opinion for any extension maybe's!!

I personally wouldn't have any extensions with the glue method. Having glue heated at such a high temperature wouldn't do my hair any favours...omho.

November last year I had some Cinderella extensions put in. Best thing I ever did......instantly gave me a cool look whilst I was trying to grow my very short hair. Two weeks ago I had them all removed (nothing wrong with them, my choice as the bonds had grown down). No damage to my hair at all. I've had my extensions re-done, but haven't needed as many as I've managed to grow my hair without cutting it myself lol!!!

I didn't have to buy any special shampoo's and could wear a hat no problem!!!! The key is finding a good specialist.....abit like nails.

I don't think I could handle having a whole head of extensions.......when I had mine removed, it was lovely to have a good scratch.

I saw a mate who had extensions...it was like a strip of hair glued on....looked ok till a gust of wind came then you just saw this mesh strip going along the hair...Nasty. xx
