Hi. I had a call today from someone who works in another salon unpaid and wants to do the same in mine, she gets given hair product, training etc. How do I stand on this? Is it legal? She is doing her apprenticeship at the moment. I dont want to get embroiled in Employers Liability Insurance etc at the moment so all I operate is a "rentachair" scheme. Also, if you employ apprentices full time, do you need to be insured to employ them or is it covered by the scheme? Thanks.

Hi, ask the apprentice to provide full details/ info of the apprenticeship. If unsure speak to the Apprenticeship direct for clarification.

From past experience with Apprenticeships, the company providing the work experience/ work area (, i.e., you) would be entirely responsible for insuring the apprentice to include both Employers & Public Liability (Treatment Risk).

Equally, you would be expected to supervise her until she becomes qualified (insurer definition of Hairdressers Treatment Risk varies, check carefully).

Employers & Public Liability will be provided automatically in a Salon package policy.

I hope this helps.

Good luck.
