Hi, I have a friend coming this afternoon.

She had her nails done at one of those awful nail bars before her wedding. She has rather short nails to start with and they just put a white tip on and went over it with clear L+P. So the white starts halfway down her nails.

So I saw them on Sunday, only has minor lifting but needs an infill. She called yesterday and has lost a few, my problem is, I don't use white tips or drills. She commented that she loved goingt to those nail bars as they do such a great job and stay on forever. her exact quote was "if you can stand the pain they are great" I told her, hey you know it's not supposed to hurt don't you??? She said yeah but they get them so flat with the drills.

Basically, I'm trying to re-educate her on nails but I'm really scared she isn't going to be happy with my work as I REFUSE to do a flat nail shape, her's don't have an appex or anything!

Also, with the others that are still on, the white is much lower down the nail then I would normally do (looks crap) so when I'm doing the repairs, where do I do the whites? do i match the smile line of the existing ones or do it as I normally would?????

Okay any advice would be great thanks!

forgot to add, she can't go back to the nail bar as it's 6 hours drive away.

Sorry this is probably too late for you now. I would ask her where she would like the smile placed. Some of my clients like it half way down the nail, others prefer it nestling on their natural smile line. They are the people who have to wear it so it's their choice, although you can of course offer advice as to what looks best and less "fake and porno"!

Also when I have a client who has been to one of these places - I'm guessing it's an NSS here - that they may have more probs to start with. More breaks as they don't have reinforced concrete on their nails now, and more lifting as they aren't as carfeul as they should be and wil knock them more. However you won't be destroying their natural nail which is what has been happening ... and it will be an experience to be enjoyed and not some form of torture.

did she not say she likes those places because they stay on forever, yet she's lost a couple????

i think you will find once she's been to you and she hasn't had to suffer the pain, she'll use you from now on.

Also i agree with Sass, the products we use aren't reinforced concrete and i've had clients say that although they thought the reinforced concrete was better, they prefer my products because if they do bash one hard enough for it to come off or break, although it's painful, it doesn't take half their natural nail with it. once she realises this she will be back in a flash.

Okay nails are done and they are FAB!!!

Yes it was a NSS salon!!!!

The two that she lost, i asked her where she would like her smile line and i did them at the natural smile line like requested. You could see a little colour difference when I finished but i explained it to her that i couldn't help it due to difference in product.

She lost her two middle fingers, she said that these were the first to go normally, and I could see why, they were almost completely flat! so i used eclipse tips on them and explained that not every nail was the same and its quite common to have a couple different. she said that explains alot.

Her nails that were missing tips were in pretty rough, ie, divits out of them and over filing by an electric drill were obvious.

As I tell everyone when doing nails, "sorry if I buff you" if I accidently move the buff block over the skin, she said "it's okay, it always hurts when you get your nails done" I said NO NO NO NO NO!!!!! they arn't supposed to hurt!!!

I have a question but, her existing nails were a yellowish colour! What product does this after 3 weeks, it was really gross!!!! I filed back most of the product and reapplied the pink and then clean in zone 3 over the white tips.

but she left completly happy, wanted to pay me more than I charge, which i refused. she will be back in two weeks!

I'm very happy!

Really glad it went well for you. once people have experienced how a nail service SHOULD be performed they rarely go back to the butchers!!

Was it the product that was yelow cos that's probably down to the cheap crap they use!

Yeah it was the product not the nail that was yellow. really unacttractive!!!!

May be a stupid question but how is the best way to explain this to a client as they nearly always think and say thatit its your fault that the nails break.

The way I do it is to explain all about the NSS - get you in get you out, etching the nail plates to within an inch of their life just to get a proper bond etc. To educate them about the strength I actually say that the NSS nails are REALLY strong, they use very old technology which means that what they use is designed for dental work. This stuff is designed NOT to break, in fact your whole nail will break off before that stuff will break. Normally at this point they look at you and wince in pain at the memory of when this has happened to them. So then I go on and say that the product I use is latest technology and is designed to be put on the NAIL! It is designed in such a way that it is stil veru strong, but if you knock them then IT breaks and not your nail. At the end of the day a good professional technician should be as interested in the health of your natural nail as much as producing a set of extensions. When I do your nails and the product is removed correctly there will be NO damage to your nails at all.

I tend to build the apex a bit thicker for the first few times, but once they have gotten used to how to use their hands properly (I've shown them how) then they have no probs and love their thin natural looking enhancements - with NO pain involved!

I don't try and be nice about it anymore. I have seen too much damage and heard too many horror stories about what these places do. They should be shut down IMO as people don't realise that going through pain to have nice nails is not necessary.
