Hi - i am a beauty therapist and opening a salon on up in about A WEEK!! At the moment i dont offer any kind of nail enhancements only manicures for natural nails. Over the last few weeks whilst ive been refurbing the shop, loads of people have popped in and been askin if i do nails, so feel like im missing a trick!

The only thing is when ive been in salons that offer acrylics, the smell is so overpowering and my place is only small so think it will be a bit much.

To be honest, im not sure what the difference is between gel, acrylic, fibre glass etc... Could anyone help me decide which ones to go with????

Thanks guys

Hi, i think acrylic nails are most requested, as they are strong, but gels are also an option too and look really nice and shiny. Fibreglass and Silk look nice and natural but are not as strong as acyrlics and gels, however they are good for celints who dont want their natural nails damaged as they are kinder to the nails.

That is incorrect - no nail enhancment system damages nails. Any damage is generally caused by the Tech over-filing the natural nail or the client picking the enhancement off.

L+P (acrylic) is the most requested system
Gel is odourless but you do still have do deal with the vapur that comes off the product - just becuase it doesn't smell doesn't mean it isn't there.
Fibreglass/silk is good for repairing nails for your natural nail clients, it is not a system requested very often for full sets......

Whichever system you choose, you need training in how to use the product and the correct ventilation for your salon.

What i was meaning is that fibreglass/silk dont stay on aslong as acrylic etc so nails are are in better condition usually once they are removed

i use all 3 systems (but try not to do too much acrylic/liquid and powder - i can't tollerate the smell)

(before anyone jumps down my throat - i am aware that gel also has vapours - so don't bore me with the details)

Personally i prefer UV Gel for nail enhancements. You can build them to rival acrylic. But it all depends on your application. Basic brush on is not strong enough and will not compete with acrylic - however...... if you build strength .... I MY OPINION.... it will rival and supercede acrylic application.

For natural nail overlays i prefer to use silk/ fibreglass. Reasons for this is - UV Gel in MY OPINION does not adhere that well to the natural nail plate. And Yes... i have tried almost every gel on the market. Buff Off Gels and removable ones (removable ones are rubbery - Yuk)

L&P (acrylic) is a good system - faster to apply, harder to master than the others - i can do an excellent set of acrylics in half the time ..... But to be honest ... i'd rather do UV Gel anyday. Even if it takes me 20-30 mins longer. Who wants a stinky house or shop.

And yes no enhancement system damages the nails - it is nail technicians file abuse.

My advice would be to use acrylic (as most popular) but offer a gel top coat like glaze n go which you would need a uv lamp for. This will make them strong, shiny, non-porous (thus staying brighter for longer) and you can charge a bit extra ;) xxx

I know I'm being picky but the length of time the enhancements have beenon is irrelevant. Nail damage is caused by over-filing or improper removal.

There are 2 very easy ways to reduce the odour from monomer:

Wipe your brush on a pad dampened with Scrubfesh
Dispose of all unused monomer by absorbing into couch roll and placing into a metal bin

The smell is caused by the liquid evaporating into the air so by only having monomer out when you need it and then by disposing of it as soon as your application is finished (so don't have it in a dappen dish during prep or finishing) you will minimise the evaporation.

And yes no enhancement system damages the nails - it is nail technicians file abuse.

It sounds like Gel is the best system for you which is great (and nice to know there's a good gel tech nearby!) but it's a shame you feel the need to run L+P down. It's horses for courses not a competition!!!

I know you will probably know about reducing odour but the info above will benefit others.......

thanks for all your replies girls, need to start looking into courses now.

thanks again, big help to me

Unfortunately nail enhancement is an ART.
It ain't just another trick or add on treatment.
It is a profession in its own right.
You will find it the most difficult process of any you have ever learned so far.
These days, most people prefer specialists not a 'jack of all trades'.
But if you are gong to go for it then Liquid and Powder is the way to go if you are only going to offer one option. It is by FAR the most requested nail enhancement service, so it does not make any sense to do anything else at this stage.
