hi
i want to start putting some sort of "basic" make up kit together that i can use to practice on family and friends before embarking on a makeup course
my problem is, dont know what quantities of each product i will need - specially regarding foundation, concealers etc
any help or advice would be much appreciated
many thanks
sarah

well, would it be more pruent to wait until you start your course? your tutor will advise you on suitable products and you dont want to end up paying twice.

I know this is not what you are really asking, but make up kits are not inexpensive and you dont want to buy things that end up gathering dust in your kit.

Think Tigi has good point as your course tutor will def advise. If however you are determined to get some product in to practice with then a good idea might be to try and get some samples.

I use Lily Lolo mineral foundation (which is all powder), concealers and blushers. I use the Blondie colour base, then I ordered a few of the sample sizes in darker shades and I mix colours myself to suit clients skin tones. Works really really well and the good thing is that the samples are only about 75p each - but you can only order them once.

An inexpensive way to practice with different colour lipticks is to mix eyeshadows and blushers with lipgloss - just pop a bit of powder on the back of your hand and mix some gloss through with your lip brush. Its brilliant.

You'll always need a black and a brown eyeliner - I like urban decay cream liner (called 'ink for eyes') - it comes with a little brush for precision application and the other end of the brush is a round blotter for 'smoking' the eyes. They are a bit pricey at £17 but last for ages.

I would go for one mascara initially in black - best thing to do is to go to shop like Boots and try out samples - but might be a good idea to et one that has a primer on it too so you can practice with different lengths and thicknesses of lashes.

Anyway - good luck with your course! LOVED doing my make up course and love it in working practice too.

thank you both for your advice
i just wanted to get a head start before taking the course, i realise it will cost me quite a few £'s, but if i have to put together a kit anyway i may as well start now to get as much practice as possible
just wasnt sure how many foundations id need, but have decided i might just buy a palette from screenface and add to it as and when i need them
thanks again

Hi Sarah,

Chanel ProLumier foundation is widely used by MUA's so get a few shades then mix them. Also as a Beauty Therapist you can apply for the MAC Pro card which will give you 25% off their products which will save you a few bob!

Good luck with the training!

Screenface do loads of starter palettes i would really recommend them they do a small pack of 4 liquid foundations to start with and thier eyeshadow pallets are great. Dont forget once you are qualified and as a student in some cases you can get discounts with makeup houses:Grope:
