Hi all,

Im doing a home study course and to be frank I think its rubbish!!! Im on my last assignment now and almost finished but at no point do I get an exam or does anyone see my work.

I am already doing nails and these few people I do are aware that Im not yet qualified.

I was just wondering what qualifications everyone has as there seems to be so many out there. Im sure when I get my certificate it wont be worth the paper it is written on! Im intending to do soley mobile work and work for myself so its not like I need to fight for a job in a salon.

Although I am confident that my nails are 'ok', by no means fantastic but Im happy and my clients return each time so I guess I must be doing well.

The qualification I will get is an OCN level 2 apparently equivelent to an NVQ level 2. Apparently I can still get insured with this qualification!?

I brought the complete nail tech book and to be honest this has taught me far more than the course has.

I just wondered what everyones thoughts and possible suggestions were? I feel like a little fish in a HUGE pond .... wayyyyyyyyy out of my depth!!!

Thanks

I would phone the industry insurance providers and check that they will insure you as with out insurance it is illegal to do nails for the paying public,
it makes no difference if you are in a salon, working mobile or working from home you still need insurance,

here are some i can think of off the top of my head
the guild
babtac
professional beauty
salon gold
if you google them you will find the numbers for them,

if you find that they don't recognise the qualification after the course provider has stated that you can get insured then it is time to make complaints and ask for your money back hun, hth

OMG ... I didnt realise it was illegal!!!!:eek::eek:

Thanks for your advice I will certainly look up your suggestions! Im finishing the course this evening, Im on my last question now so I should find out my result of the course during the next week.

I hate being naughty!!! :(

Thanks Loubylou, i spoke to lynne at the beauty gild and she advised If i do these conversion courses I can be insured wit them but as mycourse stands on its own I cant!!!

I've never understood how you could possibily learn at home?? I know they sell these courses but with no mentor actually showing you, and moulding you on a 121 basis i don't see how it's possible. And these 1 day courses, they just don't go into depth enough, and even after my 1yr on a VTCT course at college i was still lacking in skills, that i didn't get until i went on conversion courses and watched masters at work.
Without insurance you wont be able to buy products in many reputable places, which is good. of course you can from others but is it worth it?? Insurance is cheap anyway and it's priceless piece of mind, as even the bestest of friends can turn on you if they feel like they haven't had a good service. (biggest thing i learnt in a salon that clients are NOT friends in the slightest, if they feel like the service wasn't up too scratch)
Good luck with your results, shame you feel like it's not worth the paper it's written on, but least you have made steps to train better and it's sparked an interest in nails too, so it's good for that!

Hi

I'm doing a home study as well with a dvd and manual that shows you everything. I'm just doing it so long until i can save up to do my full course (can't wait). But mine includes exams and certification with NASAB (nail and skincare accreditation board) which is apparently internationally recognized. I'm also just doing this for now to see if i'm any good at it and if that is what i want to do, and I love it. I'm practicing everyday and did my own nails already which I think didn't come out too badly for the first try. I'll see if I can post a pic.

The rules in your part of the world are quite relaxed compared to the rules we have to follow in England,
im sure your qualification will be fine for where you live

Hi hun
im glad you have the answers you needed, they are really helpful at the Guild,
i would be taking it further with your course provider as they stated that you would be able to get insurance so they have not kept to their word

Hi Di, I am sorry that you have wasted your hard earned cash on a course which will not give you insurance recognition or the ground that you were after. Perhaps you also feel like it is time wasted when you could have been doing a reputable, recognized course.

Put it down to experience and remember, that we all started somewhere. At least you have a foot in the door now and you are obviously keen to learn and have taken the initiative to read up on it and learn more.

If you can put aside more money (it is expensive I know ), then try to book yourself on a recognized and reputable course where you are in a class with a tutor. In the long run, you will be doing yourself a huge favour.
