Hi all,

I've been checking out these home learning courses for artificail nails. I've been looking at essentialnails.com. It looks like an alright plan but am I just being sucked in??

I really would love to go to college to learn but I just haven't got the time. I understand that I have to be self motivated in order to achieve a pass but is it all a sham these home learning courses, I mean do you actually learn much?

Can anyone please enlighten me, I really want to do this but before I invest my hard earned cash, i really need some advice!!!

thanks xxx

Personally I don't think you can learn the skills required at home. You need hands on experience, with real live models and a good teacher. I think a home course would be a waste of money. Make the time to learn in a professional environment.

Good luck!

hello i have to agree... i have recently finished a course with essential nails, the course was great the suppoet was great -just didnt find it right. i struggled with area and coukldnt say have a look am i doing it right. so personally i would do a college one so someone is there infrout of u guilding u. I practised on the nail trainer which is whats required but its def not the same as a real hand, good luck on what u decided, only u can choice whats best for u persoanlly

I really would love to go to college to learn but I just haven't got the time.

College isn't your only other option though - all the major product providers offer foundation training in a more intensive format. The CND Foundtation is 5 full days spread over a number of weeks and give you the best education out there....... Speak to Sweet Squared to 0845 210 6060 and you can find out when/where etc but that would be your best option IMO.

I just passed 2 essential nails courses and I think it depends on your circumstances. I am a single mum of 2 and this, for me really was the only way I could do it. It does teach you the basic skills required BUT it doesn't leave you confident to go out and work on real clients. I'm now trying to do as many 'real' sets as possible to gain confidence, but at least I know I made all my mistakes on the nail trainer not a real person.

Its probably best to save up and attend a live class where you have someone teaching you! That way you are getting one to one training and you would be able to rectify any problems that you come across.

If you really want to the nail course, you will have to make the sacrifice and find the time to do a reputable course, or else you will just be wasting time and money!

Hi. I'm currently in the middle of doing an essential nails home course in acrylic. I dont think its a scam or a waste of money as its an easy way to learn the basics in your own time.
But...... i also find some issues learning at home (with 2 kids). Its harder to find the time in your own home because I often find other things get put first. If i'd have paid for a course i'd have made sure i attended and would have been able to work without interruption or being put off until the next day for various reasons. :irked:
Also, i dont think the course teaches enough about the natural nail and how to care for the nails.
I will be doing a lot of work on friends and family nails once i've completed the course before i'm let loose on the public!!
In general its a great beginners course to get you going but wont make you a top nail tech at the end of it

I totally agree with GillyGirl, It's a great start but won't make you a great nail tech. I also agree that it doesn't teach enough about natural nails but I hadn't thought about that before as I had already done an evening manicure/pedicure course at college. I would definately advise doing man/ped before you start on enhamcements.

Thanks for your comments guys. I've already done a level 2 in beauty and finished my man & ped unit so in regards to the basics of the basics I can say I'm ok there.
So with that in mind, for the simple fact I already have the basic experience in nails and giving a manicure, is this the next step for me.

I somewhat feel if I can put as much time and effort into this I can make this happen, but getting enough feedback from everyones experiences and opinions it will just help me make a final decision.

Sorry I keep going on guys but I like to be DEAD certain before I go ahead with anything! lol
:)

I'm doing the UV Gel nails course with Essential Nails at the moment. You do need to be self motivated and its a good idea to have the same commitment you would give to a college course i.e. doing it the same time every week. Im really enjoying it and hope to pass in the next couple of months.

Im not finding it as difficult as perhaps I would if I hadnt done an NVQ II in Beauty Therapy and worked in the colleges salon one summer. Plus Ive got about 10 regular clients that are family friens and friends of friends to keep me up to speed! So Ive had loads of practice working on real people doing manicures (and other treatments obviously) and had to do a theory exam to pass my course. I dont think I'd have the confidence to work on clients based on just the essential nails course though.

Hope that makes sense and good luck in whatever you decide to do!

xx
