How can I tone down highlights?

Hi. I had highlights done today which have turned out way lighter than I had planned on and too stripy looking. Is there anything I can do at home to tone them down a bit?

Thanks for your reply. I would do as you say but my hairdresser just works for herself mobile and she's off on holiday 2day for 3 weeks. I was hoping there was something I could put through it at home to tone it down a bit. If I was to put say a dark blonde semi through it would that work? Or should newly highlighted hair be left alone? X
