Ideas for a Hair Salon within a Spa

Calling all hair salon geeks. I have a lovely 4 station hair salon within our spa, based in Somerset about 15 miles south west of Bristol. It is light and airy and lovely to work in . We use joico and fudge products. I employ a stylist at the moment who is very good but the salon is not being used to its full potential, l need ideas ! Shall i rent /lease it ? I have done a % with a stylist a few years ago but that ended in disaster long story lol!!! Can you geeks give me some ideas of chair rentals ,% etc,prices for renting or lease the salon size is 5m by 9m with full use of spa facilities for waiting area, kitchen, etc. I am looking for inspiration guys, thank you in advance xx

I'm not really sure how renting/ leasing would solve your problem. To lease out the whole hair salon would mean it effectively having a new owner. How on earth would that sit well within a spa?
Would you not be better to retain control and employ stylists?

hi Persianista i own the spa so i dont mind sub letting or renting to other stylists, just fancy trying something new and different and it is a self contained hair salon x

How would you feel if the hairdressers had music pumping out really loud? (I have worked in salons so loud you struggle to chat).
If you sublet/ lease you lose control over stuff like that. Always remember hairdressers are different animals to therapists!
Anyway you earn far more out of hairdressers by employing.

ok thankyou for your feed back just didnt want to employ more staff as i have plenty of therapists at the moment but i do hear what you are saying could be v interesting lol

It sound lovely. The thing is, you have it set up and stocked. A new stylist taking it on may not want to buy your stock. Salons within salons can get very messy/nasty in my experience. Maybe a hair manager would be a better option to push the hair forward?

mmm thats a thought i just didnt want the hastle of overseeing the hair salon again perhaps i am looking for an easy option!!! one to mull over me thinks

I don't think renting out is necessarily an easier option. I once looked into renting out my beauty department and concluded it was easier to employ and run it.

yep hear what you are saying but has your conclusion been rewarded ? or do you get hastle with your beauty dept ,as i do with hair lol !! being that you are a hair specialist and i am beauty specialist .

To be honest it was the right decision. Anyone taking on the beauty salon which is quite large wanted to dictate how the whole salon was run. I was told in no uncertain terms how my hairdressers would have to be "trained" to offer her services!!!! As if they don't!!
The new owner would have been a "salon owner" in her eyes and expect to run things herself.
Personally if I took over a hair salon I would probably be the same. Hair and beauty, in reality don't always mix too easily.
I now have 2 really good therapists and the department makes a profit. I paid out for top staff as I would in my hair salons and it worked. They have a great reputation and integrate well with the hair team. Working for someoone else could have created all sorts of issues (pay/terms/hours etc) as it is they work on the same terms as the hairdressers.

i am going to have a rethink on this one my stylist is good but is young and floats along with life!! stylists i have interveiwed in the past they want either commission or %. As i mentioned previously i did have a brilliant self employed stylist 2 yrs ago but then i found there was serious issues say no more !!!! that is why i felt i just wanted to rent or lease so i didnt have the heartache /headache of running the hair salon but i can see either way i decide my options could have problems.
