Hi, I will be the owner of a beautiful 8 week old English Springer Spaniel puppy in a couple of weeks! I'm so excited :)

I've never owned a dog (my husband has) so I'm pretty nervous! But I work from home a we have a nice big garden so we feel the time is right :)

Obviously, I'll be doing a lot of research before hand, but was wondering if anyone has any advice? Especially with a puppy!

I know someone who got a new puppy. Poor thing is locked in a cage all day while they're at work :(

Why the hell do people bother when they don't have the time.

I'm really happy for you and am pleased to hear it will get loads of attention.

Oh wow - a Springer Spaniel too! They're lovely dogs, but often very energetic and very intelligent too - so they'll need quite a lot of attention and entertainment to keep them happy - particularly as a puppy! They need a fair amount of exercise too.

We had a very elderly Springer Spaniel around 7 years ago (a rescue dog from the Dogs Trust); she was a lot more chilled out, as she was around 10 years old; an absolutely gorgeous dog though!

Oh no, that's such a shame! Poor dog! Dogs really do need human company and attention (dogs are pack animals, and should treat you as their "pack leader"); it's not at all nice for a dog to be kept in a cage all day! It's a different kettle of fish with cats, who will quite happily do their own thing and keep themselves entertained - particularly if there's a cat flap for them to go in and out at will...

I hear a lot of clients who keep their dogs in cages at night or when they go out, i couldnt do it! Our dog used to sit on the sofa & sleep in our bed lol, when we had our little girl & a material couch things had to change! But he has free reign of the house when were out, hes really good though he just sleeps! Hes just not allowed on the sofa or beds, he has his own bed on top of the landing outside our room. Although we left the door open last night & when i woke up he was fast asleep on our bed! You would think we would feel a big boxer dog climbing up...but no!

I have a 5 month old whippet who I love to death !! He's my fur baby !! Best advice , as hard as it is , is to remember you are his master , go to puppy training and ensure he is well socialised , don't give him too many tit bits and don't be tempted to give him " human food " other than meat etc , ie biscuits or chocolate ( many are toxic to dogs particularly grapes and avocado ) enjoy your dog !! X

Aww exited for you I have a 9 month old husky got her at 5 months my advice would be to be patient it took us forever to get her toilette trained but we got there in the end :) enjoy the pup!!

Thanks for all the advice :) I thought I would share a pic of my bundle of joy!

How exciting! We are getting a French Bulldog puppy in September, I can't wait! He will stay with me some days and go to work with my husband most days! Very strange how I have clients booking themselves in around the time we bring him home haha! X

So stunning, my brother has an 18m old called Zena and she is just so amazing - beautiful dogs. She's his guard dog at work but he's so in love with her he stays till 2-3 am and is back by 6am so she's not on her own too much hehe ;-)

Oh my gosh your puppy is soooo cute! Me and my boyfriend got a puppy over 2 years ago now, his name is Cole and he is a King Charles Spaniel. We love him to death and he gets treated like a baby and while we're working his mum looks after him which is great for us as we would never have got a dog if it meant leaving them in the house all day cause thats cruel.

We were living in a flat at the time we got him so it was harder for us to toilet train him so we had a lot of puppy mats to teach him until he was able to go out after his jags. I know it would have been a lot easier if we had our house/garden like we do now. The only thing i can offer advice on is for the first 6 weeks we were up 2-3 times a night with him when he needed the toilet so its tiring but you've got to stick with it so they dont go on your carpets! But now he goes to the door if he needs out inbetween his walks. ENJOY there not puppies for long but hes the best thing we did!

I have attached a couple of pics of him when we got him and one of him now. He is over 2 1/2 years old now :)

My advice would be to treat your pet as part of your family. Dogs are loyal to us and give us unconditional love and they deserve love and respect in return. If a dog creates mess and gets into trouble just remember that it is not the dogs fault. It's our fault for not noticing when they are trying to tell us something. I have two dogs who are adored in our home. They live indoors with us and give us much joy. A young pup will need lots of love, attention and stimulation with it's own little toys. Talk to your dog because it's unbelievable just how intelligent they are. We have to spell out words in our home because the dogs know what we are talking about. We also have a cat. He was here before the dogs and we have a cat flap on the back door which both dogs use as well. So if we are out the dogs can come and go as they please. Probably a good idea to get pet insurance for those unforeseen occasions. All in all our pets are with us for a very short time, so just love them unconditionally and you will gain a true friend in return xx

I have had my doggie since he was 3 and hes now 11. My mum is a dog sitter/walker so ive had alot of experience in different dogs and puppys. And the most important thing is Routine.. When you get your puppy, make sure you make them work around your shedule and routine. So if you dont want them to sleep on the bed with you, dont do that when there puppys. I know there cute and its tempting, but they wont understand if you suddenly change after months because theyre getting bigger or you cant sleep with them on the bed. I know 2 owners that felt bad leaving there puppys alone and 4 years down the line they cant be left for even 5 minutes as they stress and get anxiety.. even for a shower! :banghead:
