HI,

I am looking for a career change and want to start up my own beauty business, I have plenty of experience running small businesses and sales teams but am looking to do something I will actually enjoy! I'm looking to be hands on and not just run a business from behind the scenes!

I have always wanted to get into the beauty biz, I just dont know where to start! Can anyone offer me advice on intensive beauty courses, which ones are best and how I chose one! Also insurance, what qualifications do I need to get full liabilty insurance?

Many thanks for your advice!

First of all have you read the thread Why do people think very short courses are OK? its a current thread at the moment.

If not I would suggest that you read it, its very informative and an interesting read. Do lots and lots of research, ask questions on here, ask for college recommendations in your area. Try to not let location and money be too much of a factor, you may have to be prepared to save up or travel, but this will help you in the long run as you will hopefully make minimal mistakes and in turn save money in the long run. Like anything there is good and bad training out there.

If you are serious about entering the beauty industry and want your own salon, I have read threads whereby it is recommended that you get yourself trained beforehand, otherwise you end up being the weakest link, so to speak within your own business. Ideally, your staff need to know that you know what you are talking about as you are the boss after all.

I hope that helps so far, if you would like any further info or if you would like help in choosing a reputable college based on a little knowledge I have gained since being in the industry private message me :)

Good luck

what qualifications do I need to get full liabilty insurance?

:) Hi, you will need to check when you do your courses weather they are accredited, this will then mean you can be insured by the guild or babtac etc as they will recognise your qualification.
If you are going to go mobile, you can always train in a few treatments and then add to them over time.Hth.x

Hiya,
I'm just coming to the end of my NVQ Lvl 2 Beauty Therapy course which is also a total career change for me.
I've been doing 2 evenings a week at college for a year and can't imagine how anybody could learn everything on a short intensive one as there's so much to fit in and remember!
It's hard work but very exciting...i can't wait to get out there in the beauty world and use my new skills! :)

Also insurance, what qualifications do I need to get full liabilty insurance?

If you take a look at our Training Directory, you will find a list of accredited courses, which means they can be accepted for insurance purposes by the Guild.
