I've been in my position in a salon for a few months now. Its my first job since leaving college so i have no previous experience.
The problem is, I dont think its good experience i'm getting- it will look ok on my cv but personally i feel im getting little out of it.
I have a passion for nails and am an aspiring nail technician so have little interest in learning further beauty techniques, though i am as thats what my boss wants me to do so is a requirement of the job. Fair enough.
I am the only nail tech but there is little to no client base existing so i am not gaining further experience in the field i WANT to be learning in which is gutting as i am continually investing in my training but without a good supply of clients even this feels a bit wasted.
To top it off, I am not on the books and despite me asking for a few months now, i feel as though i'm being fobbed off and that my boss only really wants cash in hand staff, for financial reasons i cant do this much longer as i need to be working on the books- i've told my boss that cash in hand is not an option for me and i need to be on the books but all i keep being told is 'its being dealt with, not long now'.
How long does it take to register an employee?
Am i wasting my time in this job or should i stick it out longer for the CV experience?:o

Thanks!

if it's cash in hand then surely no proof that you worked there so isn't CV experience???

look for a nail tech position in a nail salon

post an ad in the Guild classifieds or post on here

to register you, all she needs to do is call her accountant to get you added on the payroll. Simples. By not paying you through the books, your NI contributions will not be up to date, which might not be a amassive issue just now but if you work there for years and years it will.

Look for another job. Good luck xx

At the moment, i'm only qualified to do mani's, pedi's and L+P- though only 6 months experience in that, can i really class myself as a nail tech on those skills? My full sets are about 2 hrs and re-balance is much the same.
I hadnt considered that the salon experience would be worthless while not on payroll. Food for thought.

Also, how long does it take to set up a payroll system- apparently its that that needs doing- why its taking so long?

Thankyou both, I value the opinion of fellow geeks a lot.

well if she doesnt have payroll set up at all, thats why shes avoiding it, it costs me around £15 a month to have people on a payroll, and then I have to pay NI for them too, so I would say she'd maybe be paying around £25 a month on top of what she is paying you if she had to set up a pay roll. pay roll is simple to set up, she just calls someone who does it (i just use my accountant) and they get her details from her (if its her accountant they will already have it) and your details like name address and NI and thats it sorted. x

If there is an existing business with no payroll system, is this legal? Also, how long would it take to set this system up and add on new employees? Will it take longer with a new tax year coming in?

if she has employees then i cant see how she is working out tax codes etc and deductions without a payroll in place.

its sooooo simple to organise. I just called my accountant, they needed the salon details and the girls details and it was pretty much set up there and then. she just sounds like a lazy half hearted woman. and she could be causing problems for staff, eg how will you get a mortgage if you have no pay slips to show how much you are earning? if you are not making NI contributions you then risk losing your right to a state pension etc.

Just irresponsible.

Just to add, i worked cash in hand may years ago. I was realy young and didnt realise if you arent registered as employed, self employed or unemployed (unemployed is when you are claiming job seekers allowance through the job center). You WILL get a national insurance bill. Mine was close to 400 pounds. So all those weeks you are not registered as working or not working you bill will be adding up. Thats just the way it is, NEVER EVER do cash in hand work xxxxx

Did she take you on as a Nail Tech or as a therapist? I'd ask her for a contract which also states your job description too. If she won't put you on the payroll or give you a contract then look for something else. You don't want to end up with a big tax bill or her to let you go without giving you any notice. Arrange a meeting with her and discuss all the issues. Tell her that you want to do everything legally and above board and it writing. It's in both of your interests to do that. If she's still being unreasonable then leave.

I hope you can resolve this or find another job where you are happy and can enjoy learning.

Good Luck

xx
