just had letter from the council saying i now need a license to do massage £134.00, thought they were meant to be helping small business!!
just curious to know does anyone else have to have one?

Many councils (not mine) require you to hold a licence to carry out a beauty treatment or multiple beauty treatments.

Which council do you fall under?

what a money making racket. tax, insurance, government levies vat . . . . . the list is endless ... where does it end

herefordshire,

I have to pay this too. They are a bunch of bandits

Well this is double edged!

This is a license from the local Environmental Health Dept. The purpose of it is to make sure that salons follow all H&S regulations and staff are suitable qualified. As a consumer I'm sure you'd like to know there are some regulations.

I know someone will now say that they don't know what they are talking about when they visit and some don't. Regulations, qualifications and acceptable industry working practices change all the time and the do, on the whole, try to keep up.

So many winge about why 'they' (whoever they are) don't regulate the industry which under current legislation is virtually impossible. Areas that can be regulated, legally, i.e. H&S issues, are regulated and that's not right either!!!!

Yes, the cost is quite high but they are not a charity and council taxes pay for other things. It's your choice to have a salon and your choice what services you offer. Just add the cost to your overheads. It's not a surprise.

I could understand this if every council actually checked up on you, but in 13 years I have never once been checked or inspected by the council after they received my money for my skin piercing licence!

I haven't been checked for about 5 years either. Not exactly working for their money are they? I agree in principle that salons should be checked and licenced each year. Any good salon has nothing to fear. My problem is that we are not checked, and when we are, stupid new idiotic rules have been brought in to add to our work and costs with no benefit to either client, staff or owner. It is simply a job creation scheme for the council.

do people really expect to pay nothing to set up a business?

not at all. I am happy to pay £134 for a certificate to tell clients that my salon and staff have been checked and are deemed safe. I simply object to paying £134 for a bit of paper which is all it is when nobody bothers to come out and do their job. I cannot charge for work I don't bother to do, why should anybody else.

Also they ask me every year if I have a four poster bed.

Why ? Do they think you're running something you shouldn't ?? Lol

You have to provide paperwork and qualification proof to get a license. If there was a complaint to the EHD, Trading Standards or a solicitor then this is essential. If all this isn't in order then you will be in big trouble without a leg to stand on.

Yes, a visit to check on everything is the ideal situation and they will at some point. They definitely will if there is any suggestion that something isn't right

Those that do get a visit will then come on here and complain that someone who isn't a BT or technician is asking questions!!

Massage has always been a difficult area!! It is all to do with whether it's Level 2 or 3 (as has nails) and also if it falls into the 'sex industry' as opposed to BT

A bit more understanding in regulations and legislation of the service industries would help here!!!

What a disgrace ..its all money.. i havnt getting anything YET ..:)

They'd make a lot more money licensing places that are in the sex industry then a few massage therapists, nail techicians and beauty therapists.

I have to say I really can't see how this makes much of a difference to clients.
