I am thinking about adding some glycolic peels to my treatment list. As I already offer microdermabrasion, which can work deeper into the epidermis, I just wanted to know if there would be any additional benefit to me offering similar treatments. I have done some research a notice that some salons offer both during one treatment. As a skin care therapist I can only use a peel of up to 40%, of course anything higher has to be carried out by a nurse/doctor. Is a 40% glycolic peel equivalent to a moderate microdermbrasion level?

Hi It depends on whether the peels are buffered or unbuffered. Unbuffered peels are stronger - 40% buffered glycolic is not as strong as 40% unbuffered glycolic. I am expanding my peels and some types are more than 40%. Stronger is not always better - it depends on clients skin types and needs.:)

Hi,

In the salon we used both treatments but not on the same day. We used to do a block of treatments, mixing up microdermabration and glycolic peels. It worked really well. :)

What you are asking depends upon what microdermabrasion machine you operate. However, I would NEVER use a glycolic peel at the same time as an MDA treatment.

40% glycolic, to be honest, in only going to be very superficial - however it will provide the equivalent to a good facial treatment - a good refresher so to speak, just keep treatment outcomes realistic - that is the main thing - you are not going to actively 'treat' skin conditions with a 40%, but, as I say, will be a good exfoliating treatment. As I am sure you know, some people can be very sensitive to glycolic, which is why I would not do along with Microdermabrasion.

So, if your clients want a 'refresher' then by all means go for the 40%, if they are looking for therapeutic outcomes such as pigmentation, sun damage, lines & wrinkles, acne & scarring treatments - really they would be wasting their money on a 40% glycolic treatment - or even a course, not really going to make much of an impact.

Would you say it is pointless offering peels up to 40/50% glycolics if I currently offer MDA treatments. What I am trying to find out is the equivalent a 40/50% glycolic is to a MDA treatment. I use a sorisa machine.

oooo, how interesting! I was informed by my (soon to be) MDA/glycolic supplier that you can use diamond head MDA just before a peel. Is this not correct?
Thanks!

I also would be wary of using MDA with a peel - however I disagree that peels of milder concentrations cannot be effective. I have now treated many hyper pigmentation cases - some severe and have had really good results (even those who have seen a dermatologist). It does take time granted but I feel that slower treatments are actually better as the less risk you run of causing hyper inflammatory pigmentation and the skin surface is less affected by the peel. I do use different combinations of peels to suit different skin types and with good home care the resuts are very good.:)

Hi I have been using MD formulations for the past year and from there training they say there is not much point in using a higher % than 40 in glycolic peels a higher % dosent do much more that 40% this is wot im told by MD Formulations. with about 15 to 25 treatments using glycolic peels it can very much help with acne, pigmentation and ageing iv seen it happen it just takes time and the person really needs to be using good homecare. and its is actully very gental on the skin just a bit itchy i suffer from acne i have a peel once a week wen it playing up and it works wonders after about 3 my skin is nice a clear and smooth.

I think they have told you a load of tosh so to speak. I guarantee if you put 40% glycolic on your skin, then try 70% - you sure will notice the difference! (I don't mean literally of course)! Which is why a 70% glycolic is physician only! There are huge variances in glycolic peels out there ranging from beauty therapy grades to medical grade.

Skin care with glycolic in can be very effective, but a lot of people cannot tolerate it.

Lynne - I would not be performing medical grade glycolic peels at the same time as MDA. What glycolic peels are you going to be offering? Why would you want to combine? You are going to increase the risks and trauma to the skin. Personally I would do one or the other and assess tolerability, much safer.
