Evening Everybody!
I'm currently studying nail service's at college and my natural nails are taking such a battering :(
We've been learning about fibreglass and silk systems and use EzFlow products. Each week we practice on each other and i dread the other girls working on my nails with chemicals and products. Two of my natural nails have been over filed during tip application so they now have ridges. I have another nail which was way overbuffed, causing the nail bed to turn a deep red/purple colour.
What can I use to make my nails feel better and help them repair after college each week? I am currently using solar oil twice daily and a hand and nail cream by the body shop. My nails have never looked so sad :(
Any advice would be great :)

I HATE hearing these stories becsuse it is inexcusable that any tutor should allow this to happen in her classroom. I used to guarantee to models that their nails would not be abused in my classroom.

Good news is that nails grow so they will only be 'ruined' for as long as it takes for them to grow out.

You can grow them out in 2 ways. Wear enhancements done by someone who is competent and who. CARES about the health and condition of your nails, or wear nothing and just keep short and sweet until they grow out along with Solar Oil use. Solar Oil will not repair the damage, but will keep what you have left well hydrated and more flexible.

We're not aloud and kind of extensions :( This is so that each girl in the class has a model to practice on :/
I'm going to have to keep them short and wait for them to grow out.
I cannot wait to finish this year and begin training with CND.
I am surprised at my tutor also, she is allowing some very low standard practical and theory work to pass and it does bother me because then my fellow classmates continue on in their work thinking that they have 'perfected' the technique. Sorry for ranting. I just think if you're going to do something it should be done properly! So glad I found salon geek. I am constantly referring to the tutorials etc and find it more helpful than my course content!

That's awful zowee! Have you showed your tutor your nails?!!
I too am at college part time, I've been quite lucky as my partner is on another nail course too and she always let's me practice on her (it's only one lesson a week) and I've not damaged her nails at all!
I do agree about this site...I've learnt so much:):)

My nails went through it too at college!! One girl filed through my nail plate & there was blood!!! The tutor still passed her on blending a tip!! Tell the tutor she should let them practice in her as your nails aren't upto anymore abuse xx

Outrageous!! Don't know why anyone goes to College for nails when there is so much bad press about them and there is good education available elsewhere. College education isn't cheap either. Don't people look into these things thoroughly first when spending their money?

Hey Lucy!
Yer I've shown my tutor, was kind of made to feel that it's to be expected. I got to the point of refusing to allow any practical on my fingers a couple of weeks ago and have instead been working with girls that need pedicure range completed. I'm not claiming to be perfect but I know that after 6 months of going one day a week, and hours of practice on my friends out of college my work is improving and i am confident with manicure, pedicure and the fibreglass system (confident with my friends-ill probably get a case of the shakes the first time i have a client i dont know lol )
The thing I have found is that most of my class are there to train quick and make money as soon as they can. I havent charged anyone I practiced on, have you!?
Also, do you study the fibreglass system at your college? If so what is your opinion on it? I don't like the results at all :/

Yes my class are definitely there just to train quickly...I'm quite shocked by the standard of work that's being passed!!!
I have mainly practiced on my daughter as obviously I have no insurance until I'm trained, I've done a few manicures for some mums at school and just charged a fiver. I don't want to do enhancements on people until I'm fully insured!
We are studying gel at college which I do like but the gel is not great quality so I can't wait to train with CND and get my hands on Brisa lol
I also want to learn L&P as it does seem popular and hopefully will help me get a good client base in the future xx

I did research the course geeg, I was told by most people to avoid the fast track courses (5-7 days) and thought because this course was studied over a year I'd gain more knowledge and experience. I have been saving my pennies though and have found my nearest CND educator. I've gone the long way around but through no fault of my own. There is a lot conflicting advice out there.
Its quite hard to say in class when I think something isn't right, I think it's made me look a bit mouthy, it's as if I'm talking out of turn lol!

Snap! You sound just like me lol my friend is a hairdresser and went on a 5 day nail course, she advised against it saying it was too much to take in and not enough time to practice so I thought the college course would be better...oh well, you live and learn. I have learnt plenty on my course but I'm not going to be producing nails that I'm totally happy with until I'm using a good brand x

Couldn't agree more Lucy! I've learnt loads, but this course hasn't taught me how to produce quality nails at all. I find myself going to college then coming home logging onto salon geek and researching what I've just been told. I'd say a good 75% of the course is rubbish. The biology and science is spot on but the practical, well :/ !!
I don't understand how studying for 5 days makes you qualified either! There are loads of mobile technicians in my area that have done them, got insurance and are in business within a week. Roll on September is all I've got left to say lol! Good luck with the rest of your course, to you and your natural nails!!!

Good luck to you too xxx

I totally understand and know education is a mine field .. I suppose we spend SO much time here on salongeek explaining just what is good and what is not that it seems inconceivable that people still do college courses. I wasn't being specific and I' did not mean to offend.

Do you know, that for more than 25 years we at CND taught 5 day Foundation courses and produced the best trained nail technicians in the UK as they went on to complete their on-going education. The biggest problem is the fools who think that education ends or that they can be remotely competent after 5 days ... Or 5 years!! Education never ever stops and the sooner people learn that, the better. X

I'm at college 1 eve a week and have to say thankfully not all college classes or tutors are as bad as you ladies have got.
Mine is lovely, she is thorough in her teaching and will go over anything to ensure everything is understood, we've done fibreglass, silk and acrylics and I have to say none of us have had any real problems, I've had 4 students work onmy nails in class and the tutor and I've received no ridges, the only thing I found out was fibreglass goes cloudy and comes off my nail within a week regardless who does it or if the kit was old or brand new.
On one occasion we didn't have enough folk in to pair up and work as one was poorly so I did the tutors natural mail repair... Scarey haha but once the nerves went I did a good job that lasted a fortnight ;)
Just to say that not all college learning is pants, I think if your lucky enough to get a good tutor who cares about her students doing a good and decent job then college is a positive time.

Geeg, I agree there is better education out there. However, I have found in the past when I have unfortunately been unemployed that going to college has the benefit of funding from the government whereas companies which specialise in the nail industry don't have this option. So for some folk its that what makes them go to college regardless
This is why I did my first l&p course with someone else as I had the funding from a government scheme (and I didn't learn nearly enough about the natural nail).

You are fortunate ... But having taken no other classes you can't really know how thorough the tutor is as you have no one to compare her or her training to. One thing I hear constantly on this site is, "I had no idea how much information I had missed on my course until I went on a CND course.". You may think your tutor is thorough now, but you may think differently later.

Not all college learning is pants, but it is a shame it is the 'luck of the draw' for most when what you are supposed to achieve is a standard of training that is at least the same, or it isn't a standard is it?

As for funding, that is another issue.
