Hi there,

I am thinking of a career change going from accountant to training to become a nail tech. I have applied to do a manicure course at my local college and was wondering if this is the best way to start or am I better doing a cnd course. Just don't want to be a number cruncher any longer lol. Please any help or advice.

Im not a nail tech myself but I would say you are best starting off with doing the manicure course as this will give you all the basic training you need and will be in my opinion a good building block to start your training with..

Im sure a nail tech will be along soon to give advice etc, good luck with your new chosen career path.

Oh and welcome to the forum

I would say it would be best to do this at college to gain an NVQ.
You could always do a convertion with CND after. xxx

Personally, I would say look at all the large companies - OPI, CND, Ezflow, Backscratchers etc. and do your training with one of them. Do plenty of research before you decide which way to go. They will all start with basic manicure anyway.

I totally changed career in my early 40s, I really didn't want to spent months in a college with lots of very young people - I know I would have felt uncomfortable. There are lots of wholesalers who offer short courses, but I would steer clear of them too.

Hey number cruncher... funnily enough you are not the first and I am sure not the last accountant to want a career change. We are about to embark on something very exciting with CND for 2011. You could get in on the ground floor for January and at half the cost. If you would like more info please feel free to call or email me. This would give u everything and I mean EVERYTHING from mani / pedi, l&p, gel, colour painting, Shellac and govt standard as well as CND Introductory Diploma. Plus all products.

Before we intro to our team of UK CND EA's we need to work a few small logistics hence 2 trade test 14 day classes. So, if u r serious about your future in nails, let me know.

Hi guys can I just say thanks for all the help and advice. I have looked at at a few courses and I need to start saving the pennies to do the courses lol. I think the main reason for me wanting to go into this is that it's creative and I enjoy meeting people something that accounts does not offer lol.

Too bad no deals like that in Canada.
I LOVE Ez Flow... but no real support in Quebec/Canada for any brand because of lack of standards, requirements & licensing etc..........

Wannabe... in YOUR shoes, I would JUMP at that opportunity with both feet!!! It doesn't get better than that!

Hi there like yourself I decided a change of career, im a complementary therapist part time and Im a student doing nails.I looked into many ways of training and cost wise to do the basic training and get the practice and skill personally I think doing a Nail technician course at college would give you that, you learn manicure, pedicure and L&P and to be honest it is a third of the cost and if you can do acrylics then gels are a breeze. Once you have your qualification you then can expand and look into more experiencial training with different brands which you prefer as by then you will know what works for you and what you prefer and if it isnt for you you wont have wasted a lot of money as college courses are around £450 and lasts the year for the 3 subjects. kit isnt included but you will make that money back.
As a therapist ive tried college courses and private and for specialised areas I wouldnt recommend them but for the basics in nails there pretty good.
Hope this helps as I know its overwhelming..been there recently too but would never look back.

Thanks kalybell, how are you finding the course? I ve applied to my local college, just waiting for them to get back to me.

Hi well its actually not a bad course, its mainly all practical and weve just about finished manicure and pedicure just exam left but its pretty easy going and weve had loads of practice as its two nights a week. Its not difficult and helps gain you practice on each other and is a laugh.Im looking forward to doing the acrylics and so is everyone is.I was a bit worried about being one of the older ones there but its mixed and we all just get on with it.Once im finished ill probably look to use nsi or cnd as there proving to be the main contenders but from experience its better to get practice before jumping in when you know more about products and use.
Hope you hear soon about your course, there very popular and it took me 2nd try to get on course, but it flies in and its an accredited course for insurance purposes rather than just being able to be insured by the guild, which a lot are.
If you need any help or have any questions as im in Lanarkshire feel free to contact me, if i can help at all I will.
Hope Ive been a bit of a help as a big step..
take care

Hi

I'm 34 and decided that being a Pharmacy Technician/NVQ Assessor/Teacher wasn't for me any more, so I enrolled on a part time evening NVQ 2 in Beauty Therapy and it's the best decision I've ever made.
The students are all over 20 years old and most of us have kids etc, was advised against doing full time course as it was all 16-19 year olds who were there because they had nothing better to do (college's words, not mine!)
The girl I partner at college is also an accountant who is wanting a change, I'm also married to an accountant so I know how unvaried (is this a real word? LOL) the work can be.
The CND offer looks like it might be quite good, depends how they want paying, most colleges will let you pay in installments without taking out a credit agreement (e.g. course cost for me was £800 and something, and I pay £103.10 1st payment then £107.00 per month for 7 months, then had to buy kit and uniform approx £200)
Hope this helps and that you are happy with whichever route you take

Seriously wow don't take this wrong way but you sure as he'll must never have tried training with cnd??? As if you did you would know they are #1 on nail care there education is way above and beyond your college courses and I'm sorry mine cost approx £500 with kit included may I add.

You say you would make money back?? How ??? If your not qualified and using poor products with a not so good tutor ( not all) then your nails are gunna be well,, erm,, the same.

Mrs Geek, I would REALLY be interested in that. Would it be okay if I emailed you also?

I have sort of put off learning nails for a long time because of a multiple of reasons but I have been interested in nails for years!! I also work in accounts and I have just had enough!!!!!!!

Kim.

Hi

I was in the same position as you recently. I was an engineer and had always been interested in the beauty industry. I realised though that it was nails I was most interested in and had been doing my mum's and my own for years.

I highly recommend CND for beginners. I did the Foundation liquid and powder course this year from August-October and loved it. Just got my certificate through yesterday actually! It was a fab course, I was so clueless to begin though that I didn't even realise liquid and powder meant acrylic :o

I'm positive it was the right course to do over others now that I've spoken to people who have completed training from different places. Definitely equipped me for a career in nails! x

On another note, something I meant to point out and forgot:

I've seen the same thing happen on this site again and again.

People go to inferior schools or inferior brands, and wind up trainging AGAIN with a better school or brand.
In many cases, due to location - they go to CND afterwards (CND is very strong where you are, but I'm NOT saying that there aren't other good brands offering good education)
Save your time and money, get it right the first time, go straight to CND.

I'm an EZ Flow lover, but I can't speak for it's availability in your area, nor it's education because the Quebec version of the course.... leaves a lot to be desired (this is NOT a reflection on EZ Flow, just a reflection on local lack of standards).

Having said all of that, my advice, based on YOUR local and what I've seen/read on this site a million times before: JUMP at the CND offer with both feet.
I'm sure you'll never look back with regret.

thanks guys for all your help & advice. After speaking to my family, they have all agreed that I am better suited in the beauty world and not the corporate world lol and that I should retrain. Apparently I have the right kind of personality for this industry (so I have been told from friends & family). Gonna see if I can afford the CND course, hopefully I can.

Yay!! Lets do it together!! I have emailed Mrs Geek just for more info about the course she was speaking about but if it isn't available for whatever reason or if I can't afford it then I will get in touch with the fingertips centre in e
Edinburgh to do the normal CND foundation course! Yay for retraining!

I am writing to ALL who have contacted me - you should have the email tomorrow.
