Hi Everyone,

I have recently qualified as a nail technician with Essential Nails. I have a doploma in acrylic overlay. I have started training in gel nails and airbrushing currently, but am wanting to perform my services on the public. The only thing is, I have no idea where to start. Do I have to register as a business, if so how do I do this? Do i have to check no one is currently using the name I was going to use? How to I work out how much tax NI I should be paying. I am very eager to get started but obviousley want to make sure I am following correct procedures. (I would be travelling to clients houses)

I would be very grateful for any info you please.
Thanks soo much in advance
Aimee :)

are you in the UK?

If you are, you must register your self employed business (even if you're not earning enough to pay tax) or you could get a big fine. They will also advise you about how to start your business and how much tax you should be paying.

Next, buy public indemnity insurance (protects you from being sued, etc). Then you're good to go!

As Tickled purple says, get insurance asap.

Your tax office will help you with your business. They will advise on NI payments, usually Class 2 for self employed its not much money.
and they will register your business and help you with your Self Assessment Tax return form. You have to do one even if you dont earn enough to pay tax and it is very easy to fill out, you can do it on line too.

Dont forget to advertise yourself and business. Good luck.

Great, thanks v much your your replies. So once i have registered the business with the tax office, and sorted out my insurance then im ok to start, yea? Am I allowed to print flyers with the name I have come up with? or do I have to check if someone else is already using that name or anything. (Sorry if I sound dumb, this is all completley new to me)

and yea im in the Uk

Thanks soooooo much :) xx
