Night Class good or bad idea?

Hello all, I've just joined after finding this forum. I am a busy mam with 3 school runs per day, I do not work due to the children though I run a small millinery business making hats and fascinators but sadly its not doing well.

I have been looking at courses to do on a evening and after talking in depth with a tutor at the local FE college she recommended a 12 week manicure course followed by a nail art or nail technology course.

I need something that will get me out of the house and away from my children as sweet as they are I need some me time so I'm not interested in home study.

Is this a good way to start? or would you recommend something else? Any help before I part with my husbands hard earned money would be appreciated:lol:

Well I am not sure what your education is like over there... but here in aussie we have night classes... I did my training over a 12 week period.... 3 hrs per night / 2 nights a week... is was great.... i got out of the house ( 2 babies then, 3 now.... 3 under 5!!!at that stage)...i looked forward to it every time... it was MY time..still is.. when i go to work and do what i love it isn't work at all... it is fun and i love when my clients tell me that they enjoy there time out in the salon..
Some of the geeks that live near you can tell you where the best places to educate your self is... I am sure you will enjoy it

Hi and welcome to geek, I live in Durham, so not far from you.

I started my training at a night class, one night a week for 3 hours for 30 weeks, but that was massage.

The course the FE tutor was advising you about is probably the right way to go, which qualification will you get at the end?

You could then do specialist training to enhance your education, portfolio and experience.

This is exactly how I started, well nearly. I did two courses in the same year the first was make up and the second was man/ped both in the evenings.

You will find that the students will more than likely be more mature rather than 16 year olds straight out of school.

Hi just spoke to the college and it will be a VCTC qualification. Has anyone done this and then gone on to do their nail art or nail technology?

Hi Moll

It's VTCT - Vocational Training Charitable Trust. I would say you can't go wrong with this as a foundation course, you will then be able to go on and do a full nail tech course if that's the way you choose to go. I completed my original man/ped training as part of my C&G qualification years ago, but this year I decided to take the plunge and did a 12 week evening course on VTCT nail tech. I really enjoyed the course and met some great people - I think the advantage of training locally is that you will meet other local people with the same interests that you can bounce ideas/problems off after your course is finished.

I did all my training in the evenings on VTCT courses and I would highly recommend, especially if you have children. Of course it means it will take longer doing it part-time but if it fits in with your home life then perfect! Go for it! x

hi, thats the way i started, all my qualifications are thru VTCT and i did the majority of them in the evening as i too have children, i started by doing make up, went on to do beauty therapy, spa therapy and nail services.Now im about to embark on a degree in Spa Management..i sometimes think im a little bit crazy but there is some reasoning behind it..good luck with whatever u choose.x

Sounds like the course I did last year, VTCT level 2 certificates in nail treatments which covered manicure, acrylics and nail art. We all enjoyed the course and learned a lot. I would highly recommend it-I did the course for similar reasons to you and am now doing the NVQ level 3 in nail services. Love it!!!
