Im am doing a nail disorder assessment and i have done all the disorders except for onychoposis..

i have looked everywhere and can only find that it is build up of horney cell layers under the nails free edge.
i still need its cause, development, if its contagious, where it is found and what treatment should be referred.

does any one know any good sites or have any info that may help

Thanks
Leah :)

Absolutely agree with you. Don't you just love google. Onychoposis is one of the terminologies which has not appeared in my college notes, so I have just learned something new.

Me too :green:

Hmmmm, well I can't seem to find anything on it either. But I did find this interesting page in my search. You forget a lot of this stuff when you have been out of school awhile (hehehe)

I have this on one of my big toe nails acording to my Chiropodist. It looks like onycholosis from the upper side of the nail but it is a build up of horney cell layers under the nails free edge which forces the nail plate to separate from the nail bed then you have both conditions, onychoposis and onycholosis. It is caused usually by friction, ie toes rubbing on your shoes or tight fitting socks/tights (support tights can be the a problem for some people) and its like a corn under the nail free edge which grows bigger causing discomfort and as it grows bigger starts to push up the nail off the nail bed and can look unsightly. It is not contagious. The treatment for me was to have the toe nail trimmed very very short, much shorter than usual, and as it is lifted it can be trimmed a lot more without discomfort. Then the horney cells can be scrapped off by the chiropodist which leaves your toe to grow back again normally. Avoid tight shoes or socks/tights.

My chiropodist said I will probably continue with this problem now. This is the second time it has happened and it took a year to grow out... then it happened again..I had a month with my nails looking all pretty then it started off again with the lifting.. sigh!!

Thankyou soo much!! thats exactly what i was after. i had googled and googled that disorder and couldnt find anything!
i really hope it gets better soon

Thanks again
Leah
