hi everyone i have a pregnant client in for a dermalogica facial tomorrow and i know that i cant used the additives for the massage contanining aromatherapy oils as they can have effect but i just wanted to ask why this does contra-indicate a treatment if client was to ask me how i'd explain to them and which other oils are suitable i have peach kernel and grapseed or i can use the serums that dermalogica have.
any advice would be great thanks

In aromatherapy, herbalism etc certain essential oils,or plant extracts are known to have certain qualities that can possibly do certain things.Remember many medicines are developed from plants and trees etc so they can be quite powerful.
certain oils are believed to mimic hormones some can be used in absence of menstruation or can be uterine stimulants.Juniper is an example this and it is used to flavour gin , you may be aware of the old wives tale of sitting in a hot bath and drinking gin to bring on a miscarriage. This is to do with the juniper not the alcohol.
Certain oils are fine at certain times of pregnancy others should not be used at all.

The client is probably not too interested in what you use as long as it is a nice relaxing treatment if you start talking about some oils being dangerous it may put them on edge. Ask your suppliers about suitability of certain essential oils or their products. The amount of safe essential oils in any case should be halved during pregnancy due to possible increased sensitivity. I have not heard of carrier oils causing any problems so if in doubt use these without essential oils.

Oils to avoid during pregnancy include basil, cedarwood, citronella, clary sage, clove, fennel, hyssop, juniper, marjoram, myrrh, peppermint, rosemary, sage or thyme oils so DO NOT USE THESE. As I said if in doubt do not add essential oils.

hi,

i use dermalogica and aswell as the additives, you also can't use the botanical mixers.. if the have 'the book' which you can get from them, that usually lists every product proffesional and retail and says what contra indications for each.

Hi
jasmine, grapeseed anD almond are all fine to use in a facial. If in doubt you could always phone the nhs helpline as they are great in advising about pregnancy and what not to do/what to do. I have used them a couple of times. always better to be safer than sorry I think. Also take in to account that with pregancy there is always the risk of hysensitivity to anything you use, due to those lovely manic hormones! So treat as if you were treating sensitive skin. This has always worked for me! HTH X X
