Hi guys
what is the typical beauty theraphist salary in London? I want to re train and become a beauty theraphist and I am prepared to earn less than I am used to but would like to get an idea? Thanks!

London is a big place and salary will differ from area to area and also depending which aspect of the industry you are in- wax pro, nail tech, spa therapist, beautician, IPL,...sometimes gratuities/ commission are a pittance and sometimes they are brilliant.

have a google for beauty recruitment sites and look at what roles are being offered in your area or in an acceptable travelling distance.

Good luck with the switch!

thanks Sarah! Ive had a peek... it varies as you say! all of them want experience though.. how can you GET experience when they all want that? `
I want to do L2 and L3 and then IPL! :)

Hi, I work in central London as a beauty therapist and I am on minimum wage, which is 6.08/per hour. However, I know there are some salons that pay slightly more (about 7pounds/hour) but most therapist I know in London are on minimum wage. Unfair and I am really unhappy about it but that's another subject.
Hope this helps.

Hello
That is extremely worrying! Its half my current salary (I work in an office).. jesus… how on earth do you live on that??? !!
Perhaps better to just be a self employed beautican? Also, ive heard the salaries migh be better if u work with IPL and that sort of thing which im really interested in!

I could not live off that salary - I only work part-time in the salon! I could not live on such a low salary and that's why I have another non-beauty related job (3days a week) where I earn twice as much as in the salon.
Don't get me wrong - my career is beauty therapy and that's what I want to do in long term and be self employed one day etc...but until I get all the experience I need for that I have to work in the salon.
Just to add, we do IPL in our salon and we are still on minimum wage.
I really think beauty therapist are extremely underpaid given how much we have to study/train/practise.
Please don't be put off by this as I know there are salons that pay slightly more and there is always possibility of being self-employed.
HTH.

It actually disgusts me how little us beauty therapists get paid. Luckily I'm self employed but my last job was at a very well known spa group. I was a 'specialist therapist' and on £6.35 an hour, when the treatments were costing £70-£95 per hour for clients.

It's insulting considering everything we have to learn!

Hello
Its really really shocking!! I am about to spend 2500 on my NVQ2 folowed by another 2300 on my NVQ3, only to go to this type of salary thats a joke to me but Id like to be self employed then.
What do yiou do, are you mobile Rhiannon? How much more do you earn and how did you work up ypur client base?

Hi,

I got payed £10p/h which is not too bad. It was through an agency. So I was pretty happy. But even without help of an agency, I got £10ph.
It depends who you work for but yes, you have to expect much less as newly qualified therapist, unfortunately.
But with experience you will get pay rise but again it depends who you work for and what are their scheme of work and pay rise.
I knew therapists who after one year took on higher postions within beauty industry and they are managers now.

oh thats interesting! Does give me some hope........... better to go through agencies maybe then.. anyways thanks so much for all the replies it gives me some idea.......... as a lot of the job posts do not reveal the salaries, they only say :on application

I think it is shocking how little beauty therapists are paid these days, especially in spas.

When I qualified nearly 8 years ago I started on £5.90 per hour, I have been self employed for quite a few years now but if I went back to employment in a spa the best I could hope for would be £6.20 - £7 per hour. In 9 years to have an increase of 30p an hour is disgraceful.

Its not just the beauty industry though my friend works in childcare and as a room manager she only gets £14,000 per year.

I got paid £8 an hour when I worked in a top London salon in Knightsbridge :( We had a lot of celebrity clientele who were paying £200 for a facial!! Thank goodness for the tips!! :)

oh wow thats not a lot either. .. ive seen job postings though for slightly more (21 000 approx) which is not like amazing but much better than 7-8 per hour............. so I will keep that in mind too, if I wouldnt then Id be put off tooo much to complete this career change....... theres hope!
