Hi,

when your self employed do you have to pay class 2 and 4 national insurance?

Or just class 2? Went on a tax course this week but im a bit confused about this bit!

thanks!

Hi I am self employed and I just pay £29.90 every three months.
I was told when I first started out that I did not have to pay if I did not want to but it would affect my income in years to come (state pension), so I just paid anyway.
class 2 is for anyone who has a low income, i.e. if your earnings are below £4,825 you may not have to pay, but you must apply for exception from payment.

I just been on the inland revenue course this week.
You have to pay £2.60 class 2 NI weekly(can be taken monthly) and then class 4 NI is paid on your profit at the end of the year of your first trading and then every 6 months thereafter (i think).

blimey! not been told that!
I have been paying class 2 for the past 4 years.

I pay £29.90 every three months and was told the same as Sharon h.
